As a dedicated fan of Outer Banks who’s been following this gripping series since its debut, I have to admit that season 4 took me by surprise in more ways than one! The shocking plot twists and character developments kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
In numerous ways, the fourth season of “Outer Banks” proved to be the most jaw-dropping installment in the Netflix original series. The demise of a key character has sent shockwaves through the Pogues, social media, and global audiences alike. However, there are subtler elements of this season that have left us equally stunned. A Poguelet is on the way! Additionally, JJ’s true name was unveiled, and surprisingly, Rafe showed a somewhat endearing side.
Initially, I was taken aback just like you! Drew Starkey’s portrayal of Rafe Cameron often made him a character hard to like due to his lack of self-awareness and his chaotic evil nature. However, in the fourth season of Outer Banks, there seems to be a change. Although he might have continued on a destructive path after his father’s demise in season 3, he’s suddenly found a sense of tranquility and rationality instead.
In the fourth season, he engages in various questionable business ventures with Hollis Robinson, only to find himself outmaneuvered when she manipulates his girlfriend Sofia into doing her bidding. Initially, Rafe maintains a more passive stance throughout this season, but as we progress into the latter half, circumstances compel him to assume an unofficial role similar to Pogue, collaborating with individuals he despises the most. Incredibly intriguing!
Wait, why do we suddenly like Rafe?
On the voyage to Morocco, following Rafe’s defense of the Pogues against Deputy Shoupe, the Pogues retaliated by knocking him unconscious and binding him. They weren’t convinced by him! Surprisingly, in this instance, I found myself sympathizing with his predicament. It wasn’t that he had explicitly earned my trust, but neither did he present any compelling reasons to distrust him. He had already assisted them in a tight spot, and there were no apparent hidden agendas.
Initially reluctant to join their group upon reaching Morocco, he grumbles along until the Pogues stir up some trouble, providing him with an opportunity to break away for a solo adventure in search of Groff. In Morocco, he tends not to challenge the decisions made by the Pogue group. It was unfortunate that he didn’t keep Groff trapped in the well, as it would have prevented the major twist from unfolding.
In the epic quest for the Blue Crown, I, Rafe, stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Pogues, squaring off against Dalia and her ruthless mercenaries. As this battle unfolds, JJ climbs a towering stone statue in search of our cherished prize. This intense confrontation follows Sarah’s unexpected act of mercy and saving me from peril. After enduring countless trials together, she finds love for me as kin, making the heart of season 4 an unforgettable journey of friendship, loyalty, and redemption.
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but notice how rarely Drew Starkey and Madelyn Cline get to share the screen in season 4. However, when they do, their combined acting prowess is undeniably the heart of our cast. Their chemistry ignites in a deeply moving finale scene that stands as the best moment of the series so far. Without their on-screen synergy, the impact wouldn’t be half as powerful. Starkey’s subtle nuances breathe life into Rafe, making him more relatable and human.
In a contrasting view, some spectators might dissent, but the fourth season of “Outer Banks” and Starkey’s portrayal make significant, nuanced efforts to soften an apparently unforgivable character like Rafe. After all, he’s a ruthless killer with nothing left to lose, yet we find ourselves feeling a modicum of empathy towards this character who seems beyond repair. The extent of his damage is not fully disclosed. What drove him to such a state, aside from his father? What became of his mother? Delving into the enigma of Rafe offers a character that one can’t help but feel a touch of sympathy for.
As a gamer, I can’t help but say that Rafe truly shone this season, especially in part 2. It was a blast watching him form an unexpected alliance with past adversaries, observing him grow wiser and more tactical, and chuckling at his antics as he stuck to his self-made rule of “stay cool, commit crimes.” In Season 5, there’s no need for a dramatic redemption arc for Uncle Rafe. I just want more of the same – more glimpses into his tender side and a bit more improvement here and there.
