As a hopeless romantic who has spent countless hours binge-watching Christmas movies since I was a little girl, I must say that this year’s lineup on Netflix has truly been a delight! From Lindsay Lohan’s comeback in “Our Little Secret” to the magical “Meet Me Next Christmas,” each film brought something special to the table.
This holiday season is all about cheer, and Netflix has certainly provided plenty to celebrate! Starting from the first week of November, they’ve been unwrapping a new original Christmas romantic comedy each week. The festivities kicked off with “Meet Me Next Christmas” at the start of the month, and we got an early holiday gift with “Our Little Secret“, which was released before Thanksgiving!
In every one of these four films, you’ll find familiar faces such as Christina Milian, Lacey Chabert, Chad Michael Murray, and Lindsay Lohan that have captured our hearts. However, each movie also boasts an array of additional talented actors, making them a delightful, enchanting watch that has secured a spot in Netflix’s top 10 most popular movies. As for the best film this year, which one do you think stands out among the rest?
To mark the end of the most joyful month of the year on Netflix, we’ve prepared a list comparing all four Netflix Christmas romantic comedies from 2024 – “Meet Me Next Christmas, Hot Frosty, The Merry Gentlemen, and Our Little Secret” – ranked from least favorite to our top pick. Discover where your preferred title landed in our ranking below and don’t forget to catch these delightful rom-coms!
4. The Merry Gentlemen
In the film titled “The Merry Gentlemen,” an unusual flavor was added to the traditional Christmas movie landscape, delighting audiences. The story follows Broadway dancer Ashley Davis, portrayed by Britt Robertson, who returns home for the holidays to assist her parents in saving their local venue. To achieve this goal, she proposes a unique idea: an all-male dance revue where performers strip down to their shirts on stage. During this journey, Ashley develops feelings for one of the attractive dancers, Luke, played by Chad Michael Murray.
Without a doubt, the film “The Merry Gentlemen” delivers on both romance and visual appeal, offering an abundance of both. The narrative, penned by Marla Sokoloff (who played Gia on Full House) offers more than just its central love story between Ashley and Luke. However, the romantic relationship between these two characters reveals the film’s shortcomings, as there seems to be a lack of genuine chemistry between the leads, which is crucial for a successful romantic comedy.
In the eyes of some film enthusiasts, Britt Robertson and Chad Michael Murray may not be the ideal romantic duo for a typical rom-com. Both actors are skilled in their craft, having previously worked on The CW network. However, there is a noticeable nine-year age difference between them that can’t go unnoticed. Despite this, the movie manages to deliver on its promise of making us fall in love and feel joyful. Nonetheless, if the male lead role in The Merry Gentlemen had been cast more appropriately for Robertson, the film could have been even more enchanting.
3. Hot Frosty
Actress Lacey Chabert, known for her popular Hallmark Channel Christmas movies, has ventured into Netflix original productions for the first time with the romantic comedy “Hot Frosty“. This move signifies an expansion of her acting horizons, and it’s a significant development for her fans who appreciate her storytelling abilities. Moreover, the fact that her initial Netflix Christmas Universe project turned out to be a success makes it even more exciting!
In the movie “Hot Frosty,” Chabert portrays Kathy, a widow who’s been grieving her husband’s passing for two years. She’s let several aspects of her life slide, like repairing the broken heater at home, something her late spouse would have taken care of. When Kathy pins her scarf on a charming snowman in the town’s snowman competition, it magically brings him to life as Jack (played by Dustin Milligan). As time goes on, Kathy invites Jack into her home, and they develop feelings for each other. However, their bond is fleeting since Jack will dissolve if he melts.
The captivating series titled “Hot Frosty” offers a wealth of enjoyment, with its imaginative narrative and an ensemble cast brimming with genuine comedy talents such as Craig Robinson from “The Office“, Joe Lo Truglio from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine“, and Katy Mixon Greer from “Mike & Molly“. It’s hilarious, incredibly uplifting, and a delightful surprise in Netflix’s expanding library of holiday programming. Here’s to hoping that the success of “Hot Frosty” paves the way for more partnerships between Netflix and Lacey Chabert.
2. Meet Me Next Christmas
In 2024, the first Christmas-themed romantic comedy that kicked off the holiday season on Netflix was “Meet Me Next Christmas.” This movie truly established the mood and raised expectations for the subsequent releases during the month. Notably, Christina Milian made a comeback to the streaming platform after appearing in two previous rom-coms: “Falling Inn Love” from 2019 and “Resort to Love” in 2021. She now joins the list of stars who have released a successful set of original Netflix movies, with more undoubtedly on the horizon.
“See You at Christmas Next Year” features Milian as Layla, a woman determined to rekindle a relationship with what she believes is her ideal partner. To make this happen, Layla goes all out in an attempt to secure a ticket for Pentatonix’s sold-out Christmas Eve concert in New York City. However, much like many romantic comedies, things don’t go as planned. Instead of ending up with James, the man she thought was her soulmate, Layla finds herself drawn to Teddy, the kind-hearted concierge who aids her in obtaining the elusive concert ticket.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast and gaming aficionado, I can tell you that even though it’s typical for romantic comedies to follow a predictable path (it’s understandable given the genre!), Meet Me Next Christmas stands out in its own special way. Kiely Williams delivers an exceptional performance in the lead role and has an undeniable chemistry with her co-stars. The incorporation of all Pentatonix tunes and the enchanting vibes of New York City contribute to a timeless ambiance that’s sure to leave a lasting impression. It’s safe to say that this film will be a must-watch tradition for many viewers, year after year.
1. Our Little Secret
For someone who grew up during Lindsay Lohan’s reign at Disney, seeing her make a successful comeback has been genuinely inspiring. She’s once again thriving in her career and with the release of “Our Little Secret” on Netflix, she’s completed her movie deal. This follows her recent hit romantic comedies “Falling for Christmas” and “Irish Wish.” With this latest title, which precedes her return to the big screen in 2025 with “Freakier Friday,” it’s clear that Lindsay Lohan is back on track as the talented actress she’s always been.
“Our Little Secret
Similar to how Hot Fuzz gathered a strong comedy ensemble, Netflix has brought together an impressive cast for Our Little Secret. Notably, Kristin Chenoweth fits seamlessly into her role as Cameron’s critical mother and Avery’s counterpart. Additionally, Dan Bucatinsky, Chris Parnell, and Tim Meadows are part of the talented lineup. Meadows even reconnects with his Mean Girls co-star. This romantic comedy is straightforward yet captivating, making it effortless to enjoy, and thus, Our Little Secret takes the title as Netflix’s top original Christmas romantic comedy of the year.
Let’s see what 2025 will bring!
