As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the recent reaction from Josh Brolin and Christopher Miller regarding the snub of director Denis Villeneuve in the Best Director category for his exceptional work on “Dune: Part 2”. I truly believe that Villeneuve deserves recognition for his masterful storytelling.
What did Brolin and Miller say about Villeneuve’s snub?
Shortly after the Oscar nominations were revealed on Instagram, Brolin, who played roles in both Dune films, extended his congratulations to the movie’s team for their earned nominations. However, he humorously suggested that he might have to retire from acting, a reference to a past comment he made about the potential consequences if Villeneuve wasn’t nominated for an Oscar.
I wanted to extend my congratulations on the ‘Dune’ best picture nomination, to Greig Fraser for his exceptional cinematography, for Patrice Vermett in the category of visual effects, and for the outstanding production design. In addition, kudos to sound team as well! However, it seems that Denis Villeneuve was not nominated, which has led me to consider quitting acting altogether. I find this system puzzling at times, but I understand it’s how things work. Regardless, Joe Walker and Denis, you both deserve the recognition. ‘Dune’ is an exceptional film, even surpassing the first one in my opinion. The recipients of these accolades truly deserve them, and I am honored to have been a part of this incredible project. My heartfelt congratulations go out to everyone involved!
In relation to the potential nominees for a certain award, Miller (known for directing Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, and co-writing the Spider-Man: Spider-Verse films) voiced surprise that Villeneuve was not considered, praising his work on Dune: Part 2 as “exceptional” or “outstanding.
This year saw a plethora of movies with exceptional direction, yet Denis’ work across all filmmaking domains stood out as truly remarkable.

Although Villeneuve’s sequel wasn’t nominated for the Best Director award, it nonetheless secured a total of five Oscar nominations, with nods in categories like Best Picture, Best Cinematography (by Greig Fraser), Best Production Design (Patrice Vermette), Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
