At the 2025 Oscars, Academy Award-winning actress Goldie Hawn joined forces with Andrew Garfield to announce the winner of the Best Animated Feature Film award. In the course of her prepared speech, Hawn revealed some personal health issues and humbly requested assistance from Garfield, who willingly obliged.
What happened to Goldie Hawn and why did she call on Andrew Garfield?
On March 2, 2025, Goldie Hawn and Bill Murray walked onto the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, to present the award for Best Animated Feature Film. As she read from the teleprompter, Hawn shared her gratitude for being able to make movies and bring laughter to people’s lives. She acknowledged that not everyone might have found humor in her films, but she accepted that as well. (via People)
In the interim, the actress from The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two admitted, “Let’s see,” before turning to her fellow presenter and asking, seemingly spontaneously, “Darling, could you read that for me? I can’t make it out myself.” She then clarified, “I am indeed blind. I suffer from cataracts, a condition where the eye’s lens becomes cloudy.
Garfield charmingly replied, “OK, I’ve got you.” (via The Independent)
After Garfield expressed his gratitude towards Hawn for bringing joy and comfort to his late mother, he said, “Goldie, can I share something with you briefly?” He then added, “There was someone who brought immense happiness and solace to my mother during her life, and tonight, I’m incredibly fortunate because I get to express my deepest gratitude towards that person. That special individual is none other than Goldie Hawn.
Significantly, Lynn Garfield, Garfield’s mother, lost her life in the year 2019 as a result of issues arising from pancreatic cancer.
79-year-old Goldie Hawn received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Toni Simmons in the 1969 film Cactus Flower. She was also nominated for the Best Actress award for her performance as Private Judith Benjamin in the 1980 movie Private Benjamin. On the other hand, Andrew Garfield has been nominated for two Best Actor Oscars – once for his portrayal of Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge (2016) and another time for Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021).
