The much-loved classic Malayalam movie, “Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha,” originally starring Mammootty, will be returning to cinemas this year. Yes, you heard it right! As per a report by Mathrubhumi, the film is scheduled for release in theaters on February 7, boasting improved 4K resolution and Dolby Atmos sound.
1989’s Malayalam film “Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha” was a significant winner at both the National and Kerala State Film Awards. Mammootty took home the Best Actor award for his captivating performance, while M.T. Vasudevan Nair received recognition for his exceptional screenplay. Furthermore, P. Krishnamoorthy’s brilliant work in production design and costume design were honored as well. To top it off, “Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha” also garnered eight Kerala State Film Awards, demonstrating its remarkable impact on Malayalam cinema.
The story of Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha centers on the life of a man named Chandu. Originally an orphan, he was taken in by Kannappan Chekavar during the 16th century in the northern region of Kerala. Following his adoption, Chandu develops combat skills. Unfortunately, his cousin Aromal holds a grudge against him, and Chandu’s affection for Unniyarcha, Kannappan’s daughter, goes unrequited.
Following a chain of events marked by deception and miscommunication, Chandu aids Aromal in a battle against their mentor, Aringodar. Unfortunately, Aromal emerges victorious but, in a tragic twist, fatally wounds himself during the duel. In his dying moments, he accuses Chandu of treachery.
In time, Aromal’s son and Unniyarcha’s son yearn for retribution. However, Chandu declines to engage in a conflict. Undeterred, the young men persistently demand a confrontation. Recognizing he cannot evade his past, Chandu bravely participates in the duel, hoping that Aromal Unni would be celebrated for avenging his late uncle.

This movie was masterfully crafted with Hariharan at the helm as director, M. T. Vasudevan Nair penning its script. P. V. Gangadharan took on the producer role, while K. Ramachandra Babu skillfully handled the cinematography and M. S. Mani expertly edited it. Lastly, Bombay Ravi lent his talent to create the film’s beautiful music.
In this movie, Mammootty is cast as Chandu Chekavar, while Vineeth Kumar depicts the younger version of Chandu. Suresh Gopi acts as Aromal Chekavar, Balan K. Nair portrays Kannappan Chekavar, and Captain Raju plays Aringodar. Maadhavi takes on the role of Unniyarcha, with Jomol playing young Unniyarcha. Geetha acts as Kunji, and Rajalakshmi portrays Kuttimani in the film.
