Original Space Marine 3 plot would’ve seen a darker Titus abandon the Ultramarines

Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40K Space Marine 3 has only just entered early development after the massive success of Space Marine 2. While fans waited over a decade for a second game, the wait for a third should only be a few years.

Following the last game’s ending, it seems that Space Marine 3 will once again focus on Titus battling the rising forces of Chaos. However, original game director Raphael van Lierop had a much different plan for the trilogy.

Original Space Marine 3 plot

In a long-deleted Penny Arcade interview, via The Gamer, van Lierop revealed their plans for what would’ve been a much earlier Space Marine 2 and its eventual sequel.

While the released SM2 saw Titus returning to the Ultramarines after serving in the Deathwatch, the original plan would’ve seen his faith broken in the Chapter as he goes rogue to fight the Chaos threat.

“The second part of his story was to focus on a ‘Titus Unleashed’ plot—basically there were forces arrayed against him that would see his loyalty to the Adeptus Astartes pushed to its limit, and his reaction would be to kind of ‘go rogue,’ and we’d see a different Titus, not quite as in control as we saw him in Space Marine,” the game director said. “He would be kicked out as a consequence—exiled, which would basically be a death sentence for him.”

“He’d return to ‘clean house,’ but as the head of a brand new Chapter that we would build around him.”

The game director explained that these events would cause him to create his own Chapter in Space Marine 3, distancing himself from the Adeptus Astartes that betrayed his trust. While still loyal to the Omnissiah, Titus would craft his own Chapter dedicated to eliminating Chaos.

“He would survive [the sequel], and come back even stronger in the third game, where other Space Marines still loyal to him would rally around him and he’d return to ‘clean house,’ but as the head of a brand new Chapter that we would build around him,” the game director said.

Original developer Relic is no stranger to creating its own Chapters of Space Marines in the Warhammer universe. In fact, the ever-popular Blood Ravens – a Chapter created for Dawn of War – are extremely popular to this day, and a Chapter helmed by Commander Titus would’ve immediately become a popular group.

Following the epic ending of Space Marine 2, there is hope that Space Marine 3 will focus on the awakening of Necron forces for players to fight. With Saber planning bigger and better things with even larger-scale battles, it’s clear that players will be served some truly delicious fights in the near future.

Until then, Saber are still at work on years of additional content for the current game, including a brand-new Horde Mode that’s much different from what players are used to.
