OpenAI plans to release an AI device developed by Jony Ive

Following the purchase of Jony Ive‘s firm, OpenAI is said to have discussed with its staff about a potential AI gadget they are working on.

On May 22, 2025, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, gave his staff a sneak peek at a device he’s working on with Jony Ive. This device seems to be an AI-based companion, sharing similarities with the rabbit r1 or even the recently closed Humane AI Pin.

The report suggests that Altman gave some insights about the product’s appearance and functionality. It seems that the product will have an awareness of its surrounding environment, yet remain inconspicuous. It will be compact enough to carry in a pocket or place on a desk.

This AI product will be distributed by the company in large quantities, but not all at once. They aim to launch it towards the end of 2026.

Yesterday saw OpenAI announcing their purchase of Jony Ive’s design firm. Since Ive had been an integral part of Apple’s design team, it’ll be fascinating to observe how his past experiences might shape the aesthetics and other aspects of OpenAI’s new tech venture’s devices.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has faced numerous challenges so far, yet the focus remains on its advantages and investment in its development continues. NVIDIA is now facing tariffs as a result of US-China restrictions on chip sales, while Grok’s controversial “white genocide” statement has triggered discussions around explainable AI (xAI). Even OpenAI has not been shielded from concerns, with Altman acknowledging that they cannot effectively train AI models without using copyrighted content.

I’m curious to find out if OpenAI’s new tool will become popular and excel in completing its assigned tasks. It has some time left before launch, so keep an eye out for updates on this exciting development!
