On September 25, 2024, Mira Murati shared a post on social media to announce her departure from OpenAI. In this post, she expressed gratitude for the six-and-a-half years she spent at OpenAI and with the team, calling it an “extraordinary privilege.” She also highlighted the impressive work the team has accomplished, such as moving safety research from theoretical concepts into practical applications. You can find her complete statement below.
Hi all,
I have something to share with you. After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI.
As a gamer speaking, Over the past six-and-a-half years, my time with the OpenAI team has been nothing short of amazing. In the days ahead, I plan to express my gratitude to numerous people, but I feel it’s important to start by thanking Sam and Greg. They showed faith in me, entrusting me to lead the technical organization, and have supported me throughout these years.
There’s never an ideal time to step away from a place one cherishes, yet this moment feels right. Our recent releases of speech-to-speech and OpenAI o1 mark the beginning of a new era in interaction and intelligence – achievements made possible by your ingenuity and craftsmanship. We didn’t merely build smarter models, we fundamentally changed how AI systems learn and reason through complex problems. We brought safety research from the theoretical realm into practical applications, creating models that are more robust, aligned, and steerable than ever before. Our work has made cutting-edge AI research intuitive and accessible, developing technology that adapts and evolves based on everyone’s input. This success is a testament to our outstanding teamwork, and it is because of your brilliance, your dedication, and your commitment that OpenAI stands at the pinnacle of AI innovation.
I’m taking a break to delve into personal discovery. For the moment, my top priority is making sure our progress continues smoothly as I manage the transition process.
I’ll always hold a deep sense of gratitude for the chance to construct and collaborate with such an exceptional team. Together, we’ve been venturing beyond the limits of scientific knowledge as we strive to enhance human welfare. Although I won’t physically be in the trenches with you anymore, know that I’ll continue to cheer for each one of you from afar.
I am profoundly thankful for the friendships that have been built, the victories we’ve shared, but above all, for the hurdles we’ve conquered side by side.
Mira
Sam Altman acknowledged Murati’s post with a message filled with admiration for her work at OpenAI. He emphasized that it’s challenging to fully express the impact Mira has had on OpenAI. Although he will share more details about the transition plans later, he wanted to take a moment to express gratitude.
Murati’s exit signifies another significant figure in OpenAI bidding farewell from the artificial intelligence firm. Notably, OpenAI co-founder John Schulman and the chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, have also recently chosen to depart, pursuing separate objectives.
Beyond employee departures, OpenAI has encountered other hurdles. Recently, the organization emphasized their inability to adequately train AI models without access to copyrighted content. Nevertheless, OpenAI is preparing for a new funding round which could potentially evaluate the AI company at an astounding $150 billion.
