Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s protagonist pays homage to a legendary Japanese actor

This week, Capcom announced that their upcoming reboot of the cherished series, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, will include Miyamoto Musashi as one of its main characters. Interestingly, there was a renowned Japanese actor named Toshiro Mifune who excelled at portraying the famous Japanese swordsman in several movies, however, he passed away in 1997. Despite this, Capcom has acquired the rights to use Mifune’s likeness for their depiction of Musashi in Way of the Sword.

During the February 2025 PlayStation State of Play event, Capcom shared some new insights about Onimusha: Way of the Sword on their website. Among these details was the reason behind using Toshiro Mifune’s likeness for Miyamoto Musashi, while Kenichiro Thomson provides the character’s voice.

Throughout his extensive acting career, Toshiro Mifune starred in numerous renowned Japanese films, with Rashomon (1950), Seven Samurai (1954), Yojimbo (1961) being some of the most notable collaborations with esteemed director Akira Kurosawa. Interestingly, he also played Miyamoto Musashi multiple times in a trilogy directed by Hiroshi Inagaki. Later on, Mifune ventured into production and established Mifune Productions, which is still operational today, possibly being the entity that licensed his image rights.
