As a gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and a keen eye for parody masterpieces, I must say that revisiting “Not Another Teen Movie” is like stepping into a time machine set to the golden age of teen flicks. This film, currently streaming on Netflix, takes me back to my formative years when I was still struggling with my own high school drama – though thankfully not as exaggerated as in this movie!
The 2000s could easily be dubbed as the “decade of parody” given the abundance of side-splitting parodies that graced our screens. Notable among them were the Scary Movie series, Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, Superhero Movie, and Tropic Thunder, all released during this time. We mustn’t forget the iconic Not Another Teen Movie, a parody classic that is now available for streaming on Netflix. We’re eagerly anticipating another watch!
“The movie titled ‘Not Another Teen Movie’ is a humorous take on teen films, with Joel Gallen as the director and Michael G. Bender, Adam Jay Epstein, Andrew Jacobson, Phil Beauman, and Buddy Johnson contributing to the screenplay. This comedic spoof was distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing in December 2001 and went on to earn a global revenue of $66.5 million against its production cost of $15 million.”
In a nostalgic nod to ’90s teen rom-coms, particularly “She’s All That,” the movie cleverly pokes fun at various iconic films from the ’80s and ’90s, including “10 Things I Hate About You,” “American Pie,” “The Breakfast Club,” “Cruel Intentions,” “Never Been Kissed,” and several others. As a fan of these timeless classics, it’s fascinating to see how they’re cleverly woven into the fabric of this modern take on teenage love and life.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “I delve into the world of a quirky high school student named Janey Briggs, an artist with a penchant for unique attire and glasses that set her apart from her peers. The story then unfolds around Jake Wyler, the epitome of all-American football greatness, who dares to challenge the status quo by wagering he can transform this nerd into a prom queen.”
Actress Chyler Leigh, known for her roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Supergirl, plays the main character Janey Briggs, while Chris Evans (famous for Captain America movies, The Gray Man, and Pain & Gain) portrays popular athlete Jake Wyler. Alongside Leigh and Evans, Jaime Pressly, Eric Christian Olsen, Mia Kirshner, Deon Richmond, Ron Lester, Sam Huntington, Samm Levine, Lacey Chabert, Randy Quaid, and several others are part of the cast.
Additionally, actors from the original teen movies being spoofed made appearances, including Molly Ringwald, Kyle Cease, Melissa Joan Hart, Paul Gleason, Sean Patrick Thomas, and more.

Here’s what some critics had to say about the teen parody via Rotten Tomatoes:
It’s no masterpiece, but if you like spoof movies, this might keep you giggling ’til the end.
For anyone for whom these films are a guilty pleasure, this pretty much delivers in terms of silliness and over-the-top laugh attempts.
Because Netflix now owns the rights to show Not Another Teen Movie, it won’t stay available on their streaming service indefinitely. Therefore, it would be wise to watch this movie right away. Your other choices for viewing this film are by renting or buying it digitally from platforms like Amazon Video, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, or Apple TV.
