In order for One Battle After Another to cover all its costs, it must earn a minimum of $350 million from worldwide box office sales.
This week, I got a peek at the initial trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming flick, One Battle After Another. Come late this year, I’ll be catching it on the big screen alongside the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, and more stars!
According to a recent report from Variety, One Battle After Another has a $130 million-plus budget.
According to Variety’s article, Anderson’s most profitable film, 2007’s “There Will Be Blood,” raked in approximately $76 million worldwide. To be considered a financial success, “One Battle” needs to bring in at least $350 million globally. For comparison, Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Once Upon a Time” made $392.1 million, but it had the added star power of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.
What are people saying about One Battle After Another following the test screenings?
Based on Variety’s report, Anderson granted Warner Bros. the opportunity for test viewings of One Battle After Another, marking the first such event since 1997’s Boogie Nights for Anderson’s films. This decision was likely influenced by the film’s substantial budget. So far, it has been screened to test audiences in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Dallas.
The article from Variety notes a recurring issue: viewers found it difficult to support any of the characters, raising the timeless debate on the importance of ‘likeability’ in popular movies, it says.
Meanwhile, DiCaprio’s performance was commended as “unusual and charming,” del Toro excelled in the screenings with the highest ratings, and Penn’s character is also receiving positive feedback.
The article goes on to say that another source claimed DeLuca and Anderson had a disagreement concerning the final edit of the film, which is over 2.5 hours long. However, studio insiders dismissed any tension between De Luca and Anderson, noting that De Luca was part of Anderson’s wedding party. Another source mentioned that Anderson himself voluntarily reduced approximately eight to ten minutes from One Battle following feedback from initial screenings.
On September 26, 2025, the film ‘One Battle After Another’ is set to hit U.S. movie theaters, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.
