UPDATE 3/28: I’ve got some news for fellow gamers! Earlier, I shared that the movie needed to earn $350 million to break even, based on a report from Variety. However, it seems there was an error in their initial statement. The actual figure needed for the movie to turn a profit is now estimated to be $260 million. Unfortunately, Variety hasn’t corrected their article yet.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t wait for the next blockbuster movie, “One Battle After Another,” to rake in a minimum of $260 million worldwide to recoup its production costs and ensure its creators reap their well-deserved rewards.
Excitedly, I can’t help but share that this week saw the unveiling of the initial trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming masterpiece, “One Battle After Another.” Set to hit the big screen later in 2022, the film boasts an extraordinary ensemble cast, featuring the talents of Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, and many others.
According to a recent report from Variety, One Battle After Another has a $130 million-plus budget.
As a devoted admirer, I must highlight that Anderson’s most financially successful film, 2007’s “There Will Be Blood,” amassed an impressive $76 million worldwide. For the upcoming “One Battle” to be considered worth its production cost, it needs to earn at least $260 million globally. To put this into perspective, DiCaprio’s “Once Upon a Time” garnered an astounding $392.1 million at the box office, but it also featured the star power of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie alongside Leonardo.
What are people saying about One Battle After Another following the test screenings?
Based on Variety’s report, Anderson granted Warner Bros. the opportunity for pre-release viewings (test screenings) of One Battle After Another – a first since 1997’s Boogie Nights for Anderson’s films. This decision was likely due to the movie’s substantial production budget. The film has already been previewed to test audiences in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Dallas.
The article from Variety mentions a recurring issue: viewers found it hard to cheer for any of the characters, raising yet again the classic debate on whether likability is crucial in commercially successful films.
Meanwhile, DiCaprio’s performance was commended as “unconventional,” del Toro stood out with the best score in the previews, and Penn’s character is also receiving positive feedback.
As a fan, I’ve come across speculation that DeLuca and Anderson might have had a disagreement concerning the final edit of the film, which currently clocks in at over 2.5 hours. However, studio insiders dismissed any notion of tension between them, mentioning that De Luca was actually part of Anderson’s wedding party. Interestingly, another source revealed that Anderson himself decided to cut around eight to ten minutes from ‘One Battle’ following feedback from early screenings.
In U.S. theaters starting September 26, 2025, comes “One Battle After Another,” a film produced by Warner Bros. Pictures.
