As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that The Walking Dead is one of the most impactful TV shows to grace our screens since the golden age of gaming. Having spent countless hours battling zombies in various video games, I found it refreshing to see the undead apocalypse portrayed so realistically and emotionally on TV.
On Halloween, October 31st, 2010, AMC debuted “The Walking Dead” with its first episode titled “Days Gone Bye.” The show was created by Frank Darabont who wrote the script and also directed it. This premiere was broadcast in over 120 countries and received positive reviews from critics, some even drawing comparisons to ABC’s series “Lost”.
The show begins by showing Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) strolling along an empty road in search of fuel. He encounters a young child, who turns out to be a zombie, and understands that she needs to be eliminated. This daring opening scene effectively set the tone for the series!
The story flashes back to a gunfight where Rick Grimes, accompanied by his friend Shane Walsh (played by Jon Bernthal), ends up severely wounded. Shane manages to dodge getting shot. Rick’s injury lands him in a coma. When he wakes up, the world has undergone significant transformation.
The hospital seems strangely deserted, apart from a bustling cafeteria, which echoes loudly. Stepping outside, he finds himself in an eerily vacant world. There, he encounters a figure known as the Bicycle Woman – she lost her legs, and later he would apologize for his role in her suffering and end her struggle. He crosses paths with Morgan Jones and his son, Duane, who assist him and share details about the unexplained rise of the dead.
Rick chose to travel to Atlanta due to whispers of a refugee camp in the city. His primary goal is to find his wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and son Carl (Chandler Riggs). Having obtained weapons from an abandoned sheriff’s office, Rick intends to join Morgan and Duane there within a few days.
While traveling towards Atlanta, he unexpectedly runs out of fuel and stumbles upon a farmhouse where its inhabitants – tragically a couple who had taken their own lives, with the husband having murdered his wife beforehand. Rick, resourceful as ever, borrows their horse to continue his journey. As he arrives in Atlanta, a colossal horde of the undead greets him. Seeking refuge, he hides inside an abandoned army tank. Suddenly, a voice crackles over the radio, “Hey there, dimwit! Yeah, you in the tank. Enjoying yourself in there?
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the captivating start of “The Walking Dead” series. Right now, all eleven thrilling seasons are available for streaming on Netflix, waiting to enthrall viewers once more.
Did you know an interesting fact? Back in the day, Wang Chung’s “Space Junk” played during a memorable moment when Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) was heard over the radio, wrapping up an episode. Interestingly enough, this song made a comeback in season 9, specifically in “What Comes After,” as Rick and Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) were whisked away by a CRM helicopter.
