Complete Spellmaking Guide | The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
Unlock Spellmaking Fast
Spell creation, or Spellcrafting, has become significantly easier in Oblivion Remastered compared to its initial version, where players had to finish tasks for the Mages Guild before gaining access to the Arcane University.
Since Oblivion Remastered already has the game’s DLC, you can skip straight to Frostcrag Spire, located in the Jerall Mountains to the east of Bruma. I’ve placed a marker on the map for you.
Once you’ve settled into Frostcrag Spire, you’ll also find it necessary to activate the Altar of Spellmaking. To obtain the required items for this task, navigate to the Mystic Emporium, located in the heart of the Imperial City Market District. There, engage with Aurelinwae and purchase her stock of Magetallow Candles Boxes. You’ll need two boxes for approximately 3200 each, but only one is necessary for Spellmaking.
After purchasing at least one box of Magetallow Candles, head back to Frostcrag Spire. Interact with the Altar of Spellmaking there. Arrange the Magetallow Candles around the altar, which will then activate it and allow you to utilize it.
Without a doubt, this is one of the simplest and most initial techniques available for mastering Spellmaking. Although the candles can be pricey, it’s preferable to bypass delving too far into the Mages Guild’s main storyline.
Using the Altar of Spellmaking
With the Altar of Spellcrafting at your disposal, feel free to engage with it to embark on creating unique spells. You may utilize any spell effects that you’re familiar with and capable of casting. Essentially, enhancing your Magical Expertise, like Destruction, will be essential for broadening your magical arsenal.
To obtain the various spell effects in Oblivion, purchasing them from merchants is the most straightforward method. You’ll discover numerous merchants offering these spells throughout our upcoming guide.
That aside, pick any spell effect you wish to use and you can define the following parameters:
- Name – A custom name for the spell, you can make it whatever you want.
- Range – Defines where the spell is going to be cast, as follows:
- Self – Casts the spell on yourself.
- Touch – Casts the spell on an entity you physically touch.
- Target – Casts the spell as a long-range projectile.
- Magnitude – Defines the spell’s potency. The higher it is, the stronger the effect. However, this also increases the Magicka costs.
- Area – How large the blast radius is when the spell touches its target. Increasing the target area greatly increases Magicka costs, however.
- Duration – The duration of the spell’s effect. Longer durations increase Magicka costs, as well.
You can define these parameters individually for every effect in your custom spell, too!
As a gamer, I’d like to point out that each spell I craft comes with a Gold price tag, which is determined by the specifications I choose. You can spot this Gold cost right at the bottom-right corner of my Spellmaking screen.
Incidentally, you’ll find the expense for casting spells at the bottom-left corner, and the figure on the opposite side indicates your total Magicka capacity.

Closing Words | Oblivion Remastered Spellmaking Tips and Tricks
As a gamer, I’ve learned a valuable lesson: When crafting custom spells, it’s crucial to remember that Weakness effects don’t mix well with Damage effects. It’s best to apply the Weakness effects initially, giving the target a moment of vulnerability before unleashing the Damage spells.
In essence, it’s not possible to layer Fortify Skill and Fortify Attribute enhancements simultaneously on a single entity. However, feel free to apply them one at a time, just avoid trying to amplify more than one Skill and more than one Attribute concurrently!
By the way, purchasing any Fortify Attribute or Fortify Skill spell grants access to using all of them. So, if you buy Fortify Strength, you can also utilize Fortify Intelligence.
Additionally, a popular tactic in Spellmaking involves setting the Intensity to 100 and the Timeframe to 1 second. This technique is especially beneficial when crafting spells that boost skills, like the method we detailed in our tutorial on speeding up Armorer leveling. By doing so, you’ll create exceptionally powerful spells at the expense of duration, thereby minimizing Magicka depletion.
In certain situations, it’s more cost-effective to enhance the duration rather than the intensity of spells, such as with damaging spells. For instance, a 10-point Shock Damage effect lasting for 5 seconds is less expensive to cast compared to a 50-point Shock Damage effect that lasts for only 1 second. This is something to consider when you don’t require extremely powerful burst spells!
With that last piece of advice, you’re now fully equipped to dive into the potent Spellcrafting mechanism in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Use your newfound skills wisely to craft spells capable of dramatically shifting or even disrupting the gameplay!
