As a gamer with a heart for romantic comedies and a deep appreciation for Richard Curtis’ work, I must admit that hearing about the Notting Hill sequel being turned down by Julia Roberts leaves me feeling like a character stuck in a game level I can’t seem to pass. It’s as if William Thacker himself has been denied a chance at a second quest!
Richard Curtis, famously known for his romantic comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones, and Love Actually, shared that he attempted to make a follow-up to Notting Hill, but Julia Roberts, the Academy Award winner from the 1999 original, declined the offer. In the initial film, Roberts starred as an American actress who found love with a London bookstore owner.
Why did Julia Roberts turned down the Notting Hill sequel?
In a recent chat, Curtis explained why Roberts declined the proposed sequel for Notting Hill. It turns out she wasn’t too keen on his concept for the sequel’s plotline.
Curtis expressed his thoughts, stating he proposed a scenario for “Notting Hill” in which the characters were to divorce, but Julia Roberts found this suggestion less than appealing.
In 1999, the movie Notting Hill was helmed by Roger Mitchell and penned by Curtis for its screenplay. The film featured an impressive ensemble cast that included Hugh Grant, Hugh Bonneville, Rhys Ifans, Emma Chambers, Gina McKee, James Dreyfus, Tim McInnerny, Richard McCabe, among others. Notably, for their roles in the movie, Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant were both nominated for Golden Globe Awards in the categories of Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy respectively. Moreover, this film enjoys a high approval rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In this story, we meet William Thacker, a man who owns a bookstore in London, living an ordinary life. However, things get complicated when the famous American actress, Anna Scott, walks into his store. A small incident involving spilled orange juice leads to a kiss that ignites a passionate romance. As the simple man and glamorous actress find themselves falling for each other, they face challenges in trying to make their relationship work due to their starkly contrasting lifestyles, all in the name of love.
