As a seasoned gamer and Netflix enthusiast who’s seen more shows than I’ve racked up high scores, let me tell you about my top picks from the Netflix catalog of 2024.
2024 was a swiftly passing year filled with unexpected events, yet amidst it all, there were numerous outstanding Netflix series to immerse ourselves in. While some may dwell on the absence of new seasons for shows like Stranger Things, Wednesday, You, and others, let’s instead appreciate what we actually received.
2024 saw Netflix conclude several beloved series such as “The Umbrella Academy”, “Elite”, and “Vikings: Valhalla”, while simultaneously launching the final season of “Cobra Kai”. Fan favorites like “Bridgerton”, “Emily in Paris”, and “Outer Banks” returned for new seasons. To cap it all, Netflix delivered a plethora of fresh shows that had everyone hooked on binge-watching.
Although everyone’s favorite Netflix shows from 2024 may differ, here are four exceptional highlights of the year to check out, along with a few other outstanding recommendations for you to explore!
Nobody Wants This
This year, we yearned for a heartwarming show as an escape, and Netflix provided it with “Nobody Wants This”. Created by Erin Foster, this romantic comedy series features 2000s favorites Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. The unique charm of the show lies in its portrayal of a world where relationships are strong and rabbis are handsome. Essentially, it offers an ideal blend of what we expect from a romantic comedy.
Despite facing its fair share of detractors (after all, everything does have its share, doesn’t it?), Nobody Wants This came incredibly close to perfection as a contemporary streaming series’ inaugural season. It manages to keep you craving more (and we’ll definitely get more in season 2), yet never leaves you feeling short-changed. Additionally, there is no overstating the exceptional chemistry and charm displayed by Bell and Brody, two actors who are still at the pinnacle of their careers.
The Diplomat
Currently, political shows might not be easily appealing due to understandable reasons. However, “The Diplomat” seems to originate from a different realm entirely, which is a remarkable tribute to its exceptional writing and acting prowess. Incredibly, the series improved upon its outstanding first season in its second installment, a feat that’s quite unusual for streaming platforms.
In this rephrased version: Keri Russell immerses herself deeply into the character of Kate Wyler, a diplomat grappling with numerous international crises all at once. The Emmy-nominated actress finds a formidable on-screen adversary in Oscar winner Allison Janney, portraying the vice president. Witnessing their confrontations was nothing short of an extraordinary television moment. If The Diplomat fails to receive a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series in season 2, something has clearly gone wrong.
Girls5eva
scarcely do comedic series aim for greatness and succeed, but Girls5eva consistently delivers with its unique blend of humor, emotion, and offbeat charm. It’s tough to come across a comedy as uproariously funny, sincerely heartfelt, and strangely captivating as this one. (Rest assured, I wasn’t exaggerating.)
When Netflix picked up “Girls5eva” from Peacock for another season, it was as if the series got a fresh start. However, when season 3 became available on Netflix, along with its earlier seasons, the show continued to fly under the radar despite presenting some of its best episodes ever. The talented cast consisting of Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell delivered outstanding performances in a series that truly deserves more recognition and praise.
Supacell
To complete our rundown of the top four Netflix shows from 2024, we’ve covered a romantic comedy, a political drama, and a musical comedy. It seems fitting to round off this list with one of the year’s most surprising and thrilling new additions: Supacell. This superhero series introduced something fresh and perhaps unanticipated to the superhero genre, adding much-needed novelty.
Supacell, a captivating sci-fi series, was brought to life by Rapman. He penned all six episodes and helmed half of them, offering a fresh perspective on the genre. The story follows Black South Londoners with sickle cell disease ancestry, who develop superpowers. This unique tale is presented through a deeply personal lens that hasn’t been explored in this way before. The series was both engaging and thought-provoking, resonating strongly with audiences, thereby securing a second season. Indeed, Supacell stands out as one of the best shows on the streaming platform this year.
