It was recently revealed that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will conclude in May 2026 after a long run of 33 years. Since this announcement, there has been much discussion as to whether the talk show host was dismissed from his position. A social media user added fuel to these rumors by suggesting that CBS terminated Colbert due to his criticisms of Donald Trump. Now, ex-MSNBC host Keith Olbermann has offered his thoughts on the ending of this late-night program and addressed the question of whether or not CBS fired Colbert.
So, has Stephen Colbert been fired from The Late Show by CBS? Here’s the record set straight.
Has Stephen Colbert been fired from The Late Show by CBS?
No, Stephen Colbert was not fired from The Late Show by CBS.
On July 19, 2025, someone using social media (Twitter) asserted that CBS dismissed a comedian and political commentator from his show because he criticized Donald Trump, only two days after CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would conclude in May 2026. This individual suggested that Colbert’s termination indicated that the United States was transforming into a fascist nation.
We’ve reached a point where we’re silencing comedians for criticizing our leader, a sign that resembles the suppression of free speech often seen in authoritarian regimes.

Keith Olbermann clarified that CBS did not fire Stephen Colbert as the user suggested. He pointed out that if CBS had indeed terminated Colbert’s contract, he would not still be hosting his show until May of the following year. Essentially, Olbermann stated that the claim about CBS firing Colbert is incorrect, since they would not keep him on their network if that were true.
Trump himself, contrary to Olbermann’s assertions, thinks it was Colbert who got fired. He made this known in a Truth Social post. In the post, he not only expressed his joy over what he perceived as Colbert’s termination, but also predicted that Jimmy Kimmel might be next. Trump opined that Kimmel had “even less talent” compared to Colbert and stated that Greg Gutfield from Gutfeld! was superior to both Kimmel and Colbert, as well as the person on NBC who ruined the once-great Tonight Show, which he referred to as the “moron,” referring to Jimmy Fallon.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my concern and curiosity following the announcement of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ending in May 2026. Upon hearing this news, left-leaning politicians and media personalities have voiced strong reactions, suggesting that his dismissal might be politically motivated. Interestingly, just three days prior to CBS announcing the show’s cancellation, Colbert had publicly criticized the network for giving $16 million to Trump. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders even went as far as claiming, via some source X, that Colbert’s termination after his critique wasn’t simply a “coincidence.” This intriguing turn of events certainly piques my interest and leaves me questioning the circumstances behind this decision.
