Nintendo takes down “SmashTogether”, an unofficial Smash Bros dating app, via a classic Cease and Desist

The SmashTogether dating app, an unauthorized app that caters to fans of Super Smash Bros, was abruptly removed by Nintendo using a cease and desist order. This unofficial platform, known as a “premium dating app for smashers,” has been legally knocked out with a powerful legal punch.

SmashTogether gets smashed

2024 saw the introduction of SmashTogether, a premium dating platform tailored for enthusiasts of Super Smash Bros. This unofficial app aims to facilitate encounters between individuals seeking their perfect “Doubles partner,” leveraging a sophisticated matchmaking system to link like-minded Smash Bros admirers.

Instead of just displaying a prospective match’s name, age, location, and gender on dating profiles, it would also showcase their significant victories against other Smash Bros players. Moreover, the “About Me” section could detail what they aspire to find in a potential partner or fellow Smash Bros player.

Without a doubt, the app’s removal sparked widespread memes among both Smash players and those not part of the community. One user quipped, “My one opportunity for genuine affection, shattered by Nintendo’s strict guardianship of their creative works,” expressing a similar sentiment.

From my perspective as a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that some fellow enthusiasts believe the platform could have seen greater success if its focus was expanded to encompass the entire Fighting Game Community (FGC). Here’s an idea: Let’s transform this space into an FGC-themed haven, potentially seeing a tenfold growth in engagement!

To put it simply, I’m at a loss for words on this topic. Now, I don’t wish to offend anyone who enjoys fighting games, but if there was an app specifically designed to help you avoid certain types of people—this would be the one to use. Frankly, I can’t imagine wanting to date someone who spends their free time playing Virtua Fighter, at least not based on my personal preferences. Or perhaps we could say it’s like looking for love on an anime-themed dating app. Surely such a thing exists, right?
