Nintendo Switch eShop and online services to close in China in 2026

As a seasoned gamer with years of joyful memories etched in my gaming journey, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness as I read about Nintendo closing its Chinese eShop for Switch. Having grown up with Nintendo classics like Super Mario Odyssey and Pokemon series, it’s bittersweet to see the end of an era, especially when those games are being offered as freebies.

Nintendo has revealed plans to shut down its Nintendo Switch online service and digital store (eShop) in China by the year 2026. To make amends for this closure, Nintendo will give Chinese gamers the chance to obtain up to four complimentary games from the eShop before it permanently shuts down.

This morning, Nintendo made an announcement: they are shutting down their Chinese digital store (the eShop) and ending their online services on their Chinese website. The Switch eShop in China will no longer sell games as of March 31, 2026, and all online services provided by Nintendo on this platform will terminate on May 15, 2026.

For those with a Chinese Switch console, you can exchange it for four complimentary video games until the eShop is shut down. The selection of games to choose from includes Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Party, Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu, and Let’s Go! Eevee.

With Nintendo partnering with Tencent for the distribution of Nintendo Switch consoles and games, it seems that an old agreement may have reached its conclusion. Notably, this announcement coincides with Nintendo preparing to unveil their upcoming console within the next few months.
