Nintendo Switch 2’s Joy-Con mouse movement was tuned for unconventional surfaces

One intriguing aspect of Nintendo’s presentation for the Switch 2 is the ability for the Joy-Con controllers to function as a mouse. However, Nintendo isn’t oblivious; they understand that you likely don’t have a desk and mousepad handy while using it. That’s why it’s rumored that the mouse functionality of the Switch 2 Joy-Con will work even on unconventional surfaces like your clothes, such as your pants.

During a recent gathering, Nintendo Switch 2 producer Kouchi Kawamoto discussed with reporters that one of the major hurdles in developing the Joy-Con mouse function was addressing its performance on tricky surfaces, as reported by GamesRadar.

As a gamer, I can personally vouch for the sensible functionality of the mouse function in the new Joy-Cons for the Switch 2. During my recent preview, I noticed that using the mouse function on both Joy-Cons seemed unusual for Drag&Drive, but it didn’t feel like a mere novelty or gimmick for the Switch 2 as alternate control methods have often felt on previous Nintendo hardware in the past. It’s practical and effective enough to be useful for many games. This will make a big difference with titles like Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 coming to the Switch 2.
