Nintendo Switch 2’s camera can recognize & track up to four faces in the same room

As the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 approaches in June 2025, there’s still a lot we don’t know about its capabilities. However, during the recent Mario Kart World presentation, we gained some insight into what the Nintendo Switch 2 USB-C Camera can accomplish. It seems that this camera will identify and follow the faces of up to four players in the same room, which will be useful for GameChat and other game features like Mario Kart World.

During the Mario Kart World Direct event, Nintendo unveiled some details about the facial recognition capabilities of the Switch 2’s camera. In essence, they discussed what this new camera can do. The camera on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 system is designed to identify up to four players using facial recognition. It will also track the size and location of your face, translating that data into various game features.

One of the aspects delved into more deeply was GameChat, a feature previously glimpsed during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. This feature allows players to share their game screens or themselves as they play collaboratively. What’s unique is that the camera can be used to display your friends’ reactions on top of your in-game racer, adding a new layer of interaction. It seems that we’ll get to see our friends’ frustration in real-time when we hit them with Red Shells.

Whether in the same space or separated, it seems that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will encourage more social interaction through features such as the camera accessory. Keep an eye out for updates on the Nintendo Switch 2, as we approach its release in June.
