Nintendo Switch 2 went back to an LCD screen because its OLED didn’t support certain features

One question players might have about the Nintendo Switch 2 is what type of screen display it will have on its handheld version. It turns out it’s an LCD screen instead of OLED as some may expect, given that the upgraded model of the original Switch uses OLED. The reason for this choice seems to be that OLED didn’t support all the features Nintendo was aiming to incorporate in the new device, but LCD technology has advanced significantly enough to accommodate those features, which is why it’s being used instead.

During a recent question-and-answer session, Tetsuya Sasaki, Senior Director from the Nintendo Switch 2 Technology Development Division, explained that the decision to switch from OLED to LCD was made due to the inability of the OLED system to incorporate desired features such as High Dynamic Range (HDR). This change, according to him, was the appropriate choice. [IGN reported this information.]

High Dynamic Range (HDR) refers to a greater range of light and color intensity in images. This feature enables designers to create more realistic and immersive lighting effects in video games, as demonstrated in the latest Mario Kart World. Nintendo has made significant improvements to ensure that the Switch 2 will be capable of handling far more advanced features than its predecessor. This includes support for up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS), 1080p at 120 FPS, and multi-functional capabilities such as GameChat, which allows for simultaneous streaming and gameplay.
