Nintendo Switch 2 HD Rumble is much quieter than the often-annoying OG Joy-Con vibrations

The enhanced HD Rumble feature for the Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled along with its specifications and launch games, presented as a refined, more accurate iteration of the initial handheld’s version. In a recent website update, one of the most thrilling enhancements that caught my attention is that the HD rumble on this new model won’t be nearly as noisy as the original Joy-Cons.

According to VGC’s report, Nintendo has stated that the HD Rumble feature in the updated Switch controllers is noticeably less noisy compared to the initial ones. The company also mentioned a list of games where either the original Joy-Cons or those games perform better with the original controllers due to their quieter vibrations overall.

Nintendo Switch 2 HD rumble won’t be as damn loud

On the updated handheld device, Nintendo indicates that games similar to 1-2 Switch and Everyone 1-2-Switch will offer a unique gaming experience thanks to the finer vibration sensations provided by the advanced HD Rumble 2.0 technology.

Games similar to Joy-Con Hide & Seek, which involves finding the hidden controller by sensing its vibrations, can become more challenging due to their quieter settings. However, I’m not sure who would be keen on such a game!

According to Nintendo, the intensity of the vibration feedback on the Joy-Con 2 controllers has been decreased compared to the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. This means that it might be harder to locate the hidden Joy-Con 2 in the minigame Joy-Con Hide & Seek due to weaker vibrations.

As a gamer, I’ve found that first-party Nintendo games usually handle haptic feedback effectively, like Super Mario Odyssey does. However, quick ports to the system sometimes result in intense, nearly aggressive vibrations, which can be quite annoying – especially when you’re playing games late at night, as I recently experienced while replaying BioShock on my Nintendo Switch OLED in bed next to my sleeping partner. These vibrations can really test one’s patience!

Although the intensity of the handheld’s vibrations might seem lower, Nintendo has characterized the new feature as generally more potent. This could potentially prevent accidental use as an unwanted alarm clock during early morning gaming sessions with your partner, due to improved casing for the controllers’ powerful motors.
