The recently revealed details for the next Nintendo Switch console include a brand-new feature called GameChat, which enables users to engage in real-time video chats with one another as they enjoy their favorite games together.
Just like Discord, this party service compatible with Nintendo systems enables users to link a USB-C webcam to their console for video calls worldwide (avoid the risky Piranha Plant camera). However, as a safety measure, Nintendo is restricting access to this feature by requiring a phone number tied to each Nintendo Account.
Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat phone number requirement
To utilize the new social feature offered by Nintendo, each user is required to associate a distinct mobile phone number with their Nintendo Account.
1. “To use GameChat, you’ll need to register your mobile phone number, as stated in our terms.”
2. “For children using GameChat, permission is required from a parent or guardian through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls application.”
To enhance child safety online, asking for a phone number is often an additional security measure. If anyone intends to misuse the GameChat feature on Nintendo Switch 2 for malicious activities, Nintendo can not only suspend the account but also block the associated phone number. This makes it more challenging for internet villains to establish a new account.
In addition to requiring phone numbers, the new Nintendo Switch 2 system also stores a brief recording (3 minutes) of audio and video. This recording can be sent to Nintendo if a player’s behavior is reported. If a player’s actions violate Nintendo’s terms of service, they may face an account ban after Nintendo reviews the three-minute clip.
On Nintendo’s consoles, the security measures resemble those of other gaming platforms, and they are essential. Given that Nintendo mainly focuses on providing games for younger audiences, prioritizing secure online interactions is crucial to protect these young players.
