The enhanced capabilities of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2‘s hardware are being utilized by Nintendo to refine the Nintendo 64 emulation experience on the latest handheld device.
Prior to the official launch of the latest Nintendo handheld device, an announcement was made unveiling additional features for subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online Plus Expansion Pack.
Nintendo Switch 2 new N64 features
The latest YouTube video from Nintendo reveals that the Nintendo 64-related content previously available with the Expansion Pack subscription is now limited to the new hardware only.
Similarly to how NES and SNES games allow for rewinding, players can now rewind their gameplay within Nintendo 64 titles. This feature is particularly useful for those who struggle with a tricky jump in Super Mario 64 or find themselves defeated by an Ocarina of Time boss. Instead of starting over, they can easily rewind the last minute of gameplay and attempt again.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled about the ability to customize control schemes for every Nintendo 64 game, just like tailoring a favorite vintage t-shirt to fit perfectly. And let’s not forget the CRT filter that brings the retro gaming experience right back to my living room in the ’90s… if only the good old N64 had HD resolutions back then!
Although the new Nintendo Switch 2 boasts all the mentioned capabilities, the original Nintendo Switch will still offer an enhanced user experience. Users of the initial hardware can look forward to customizing control layouts and viewing their control setup, a feature in its own right.
On Thursday, June 5, 2025, the Nintendo Switch Online Plus Expansion Pack update featuring classic N64 games becomes active.
Absolutely, the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 includes numerous unique capabilities, including a communication feature similar to Discord called GameChat. Furthermore, those with a Nintendo Switch Online Plus Expansion Pack subscription can enjoy classic GameCube games as well. Fingers crossed that one day, Nintendo Wii classics like MadWorld will be added to the service, although this has not been officially confirmed yet. (Come on, Nintendo, I’m eagerly waiting for MadWorld!)
