Nintendo President Furukawa confirms Switch 2 backwards compatibility and Switch Online support

As a longtime Nintendo enthusiast who’s witnessed the evolution of gaming since the days of my trusty NES, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch! The confirmation of backwards compatibility with current Nintendo Switch software and the inclusion of Nintendo Switch Online support is nothing short of music to my ears.

The upcoming Nintendo console, which follows the Nintendo Switch, is expected to include backward compatibility with existing software from the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Online support. This means that when this new console is unveiled, players will be able to continue playing their current library of games without interruption as they transition to the next generation.

On November 5th, 2024, I excitedly shared some fantastic news on social media – a sneak peek at the future of gaming with Nintendo! This news was first discussed during our Corporate Management Policy Briefing. In this gathering, we officially announced that our beloved Nintendo Switch software will be compatible with our upcoming console, affectionately known as “the successor to Nintendo Switch”. Can’t wait to dive into this new adventure with you all!

At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we revealed that software for the Nintendo Switch can also be played on the upcoming Nintendo Switch model. Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online service will be accessible on the new Nintendo Switch as well. More details about the upcoming Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with the current Nintendo Switch, will be disclosed at a future date.

The post additionally revealed that the Nintendo Switch console’s software is compatible with previous versions, and it also unveiled the inclusion of Nintendo Switch Online service within the product. This suggests that a selection of online games can be played, but it remains uncertain if this announcement encompasses the Expansion Pack upgrade, which features classic titles from Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and SEGA Mega Drive.

Today’s Nintendo earnings report indicated a drop in performance for the company during the last quarter. Nintendo has adjusted its projected Nintendo Switch console sales to only 12.5 million units by the end of FY2025, and further reduced their forecast as well. However, there was some positive news for Nintendo, known colloquially as the Big N, as they reported that Echoes of Wisdom has sold approximately 2.5 million copies since its launch.

The announcement of the Nintendo Switch successor’s backward compatibility is an exciting one for players. Being able to keep a catalog of games going across console generations is important, not just for personal entertainment, but video game preservation.
