As a long-time fan of the Xenoblade series, I can hardly contain my excitement over the recent news that Nintendo has now fully acquired Monolith Soft! The prospect of having even more incredible titles from this talented studio is almost too good to be true.
It appears that Monolith Soft, a long-time developer known for creating the Xenoblade series, has been fully acquired by Nintendo. Though Nintendo had been publishing Monolith Soft games for quite some time, it previously owned only 96% of the company, with the original founders holding the remaining 4%. Now, it seems that the remaining shares have been transferred, making Nintendo the sole owner of this developer.
I recently came across the exciting news that Nintendo now fully owns Monolith Soft, as announced on their official website. This change in ownership, it appears, took place sometime after March 2024, a time when Nintendo was still listed as a 96% shareholder in Monolith’s company brochure. I can hardly wait to see what amazing games this collaboration will bring!
Monolith Soft was established by Hirohide Sugiura, Tetsuya Takahashi, and Yasuyuki Honne, who previously worked under Square Enix; with Takahashi serving as director and Honne as lead artist for Xenogears. They collaborated with Bandai Namco to develop a game seen as a spiritual successor called Xenosaga. In 2007, Nintendo acquired 80% of Monolith Soft’s shares from Bandai Namco, increasing their ownership to 96% in 2011. However, the original founders retained a symbolic 4% stake until recent changes took place in the company.
It’s unclear when or under what circumstances the shares were offloaded, but it appears that Nintendo now owns Monolith Soft outright. With Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition set to release on the Switch in March 2025, fans have plenty to look forward to from these two entities. Keep an eye out for more news as it becomes available, right here at Shacknews.
