For over three decades now, Nike has made a significant impact in soccer by introducing its first non-cleated boot and the timeless Total 90 silhouette. Now, Nike aims to reassert its dominance in the sport. Drawing inspiration from the Secret Tournament of 1995, a soccer competition featuring 24 players, Nike recently launched Toma LA – an elevated summer soccer competition series that kicked off earlier this summer.
Under the umbrella of a fresh soccer campaign by the brand, called “Toma El Juego” (Take the Game), which focuses on an upcoming generation of athletes, Toma LA – hosted by Travis Scott and Young Miko – has been making waves across Los Angeles this summer. This event has been organizing the best young street soccer players into a grand tournament. The competition commenced in June, with local teams demonstrating their soccer abilities through a 4v4 tournament. Now, they’re all set to claim the championship title at the Toma LA Finals tonight, July 26, at City Market.
Throughout June and July, teams from eight distinct Los Angeles neighborhoods (Westside, Orange County, East LA, Southeast LA, San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley, South LA, Central LA) have been competing against one another. After the final 1v1c1 single-player elimination tournament tonight, only one MVP will remain victorious.
As a soccer enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that 64 teams, both men’s and women’s, have been vying for eight spots in the finals, with each neighborhood being represented. Teams from VBFC, La Comunidad, InSainz, Toque, House of 626, Tiki Taka, and Culture FC will face off against each other. Following a final four match, an All-Stars segment, and a 5v5 Semis, the Toma LA Finals is on the horizon. The winning crew, comprising one girl’s team and one boy’s team, along with their respective MVPs, will earn a coveted spot at the U.S. Soccer Talent I.D. Camp, providing an exceptional chance to hone their skills and strive for a place on the National Team.
If neither the MVP nor any goals or megs can be identified, and a “nutmeg” – a move in which the ball is kicked through an opponent’s legs – occurs, the rapper Scott from the band Jackboys 2 will select a winner instead.
Keep an eye on us as we bring you the online and social media coverage, including a recap, for Nike’s Tomahawk LA Finals, starting from today, July 26th.
