For enthusiastic PC gamers residing in the United Kingdom or the European Union who enjoy exploring the adult-oriented mods, it’s important to note that age verification will be required shortly on modding platform Nexus Mods.
While Nexus Mods currently has an age-restricted section for mature content, users can access it by stating they are of legal age. However, in the UK and EU, modders will soon be required to undergo a formal age verification process to access such content, or they won’t be able to download Whicked Whims.
Nexus Mods changes are coming
In a post on their modding site titled “Adult Content and Legal Guidelines,” SlugGirl, the content manager, clarified that the platform will comply with the UK Online Safety Act and the EU Digital Services Act. These legislations stipulate that websites providing adult content must implement real age verification processes to prevent underage users from accessing inappropriate materials.
On Nexus Mods, it’s been announced that they’ll implement an age-verification process for users to access a significant amount of mature content available on the platform. The exact method or service for this verification is yet to be specified.
The moderator stated that because of the Online Safety Act and Digital Services Act, as a UK-based company we must keep deleting illegal content and impose extra limitations on children’s access to specific adult content. Essentially, this means we have two options: either remove all adult content for users in the UK and EU, or alter our policy by introducing age verification for certain types of adult content.
Nexus Mods’ identity is significantly shaped by adult content, and we don’t see deleting it as a feasible solution. We understand that some users might be annoyed by the changes, but it’s necessary for us to maintain legal compliance when hosting such content.
In the context of the UK, it’s been suggested by the Office of Communications (Ofcom) that adult services should implement a verification process requiring proof of identity. This implies that content creators or modders may need to utilize facial recognition technology to confirm their age, or present their passport, driver’s license, or other official identification documents to access the service. However, it remains unclear which, if any, of these methods Nexus Mods plans to adopt for their platform.
To comply with the regulations set by both the UK and EU, I’ve noticed that there are now more specific categories for adult content beyond the typical explicit tag. These categories exclude material that emphasizes extreme violence, harmful substances, suicide, self-harm, depression, eating disorders, profanity, and body shaming. It remains unclear whether accessing these new categories will necessitate being 18 or older.
As a gamer, here’s how I might put it: Lastly, Nexus Mods has rolled out an “automated detection” system to ensure our platform stays safe. This new tool is designed to flag any content that violates our strict policy against Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). Once identified, the content will be swiftly removed, the user banned, and the offender reported to the National Crime Agency for further action.
The specific timeline for when each update will be incorporated into the service isn’t clear yet, but the website asserts that they will be rolled out within the next few weeks or months.
