New Museum Expands with $125M OMA-Designed Building

Starting in Fall 2025, the New York City Museum plans to reveal its largest expansion so far. The upcoming 60,000-square-foot extension, designed by OMA together with Cooper Robertson, is scheduled to open. This addition will double the available gallery space and enhance accessibility through new elevators, an atrium stairway, and an outdoor plaza.

This endeavor will also establish specialized areas for artist residencies and provide NEW INC, the cultural innovation hub, with a permanent location. The $125 million USD initiative, with $82 million earmarked for construction, is named after the late philanthropist Toby Devan Lewis, whose $30 million USD donation marks the largest gift in the museum’s history.

Kicking off with our premier show, titled “New Humans: Memories of Tomorrow“, will occupy an enlarged area, exhibiting over 150 artists delving into how the past and future intertwine. Additionally, Sarah Lucas is set to introduce “VENUS VICTORIA“, a unique site-specific sculpture located on the entrance square, as the inaugural recipient of the Hostetler/Wrigley Sculpture Award.
