As a die-hard cinephile with decades of movie-watching experience under my belt, I must say that the new trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s magnum opus, Megalopolis, has me utterly spellbound! Having witnessed the evolution of this project over four long decades is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Francis Ford Coppola has released the new trailer for Megalopolis, a sci-fi epic and passion project for the Oscar-winning director.
A new trailer emerged recently, following Lionsgate’s release of a controversial one that featured fabricated criticisms supposedly from movie critics who had panned some of Coppola’s iconic films such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. This trailer was subsequently withdrawn, and an apology was issued by Lionsgate

What Happens in the Megalopolis Trailer?
In the initial scenes of the trailer, I, as a captivated viewer, can hear Adam Driver’s character, Julius Caesar Catilina, urging me not to let the present overshadow the future. The fresh glimpses into the cityscape unfold, revealing New Rome – an intriguingly imagined metropolis nestled within a fictional Modern America
“In the city known as New Rome, there’s a struggle brewing. On one side is Cesar Catilina, a visionary artist aiming for a utopian society, while Mayor Franklyn Cicero, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito, champions a traditional way of life that fosters self-interest, politics, and conflict. Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter (played by Nathalie Emmanuel), finds herself caught in the middle, torn between her love for Cesar and loyalty to her father. This predicament forces her to confront her own beliefs about what humanity deserves.”
Megalopolis boasts an impressive cast that includes Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, and Dustin Hoffman
Coppola has been working on Megalopolis for more than four decades, taking charge as writer, director, and producer. Other producers involved are Barry Hirsch, Fred Roos, and Michael Bederman. Notably, Coppola funded a large chunk of the movie’s $120 million budget by selling part of his vineyard
The movie “Megalopolis” received a blend of positive and negative feedback during its debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Despite facing difficulties in obtaining backing from major studios, Lionsgate secured a deal in June 2024 to handle distribution. In an unusual arrangement, Francis Ford Coppola consented to cover the promotional expenses for the film
Megalopolis will be released on September 27, 2024.
