The upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie has found its director.
At present, the well-known production company Legendary Entertainment and Capcom are teaming up to produce a Street Fighter movie, set for release in 2026. Earlier on, Talk to Me’s Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou were slated to direct this film; unfortunately, they stepped down from the project in June 2024 due to scheduling challenges.
Kitao Sakurai has now been tapped to helm the Street Fighter movie, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Sakurai is primarily recognized for his work as director, scriptwriter, and executive producer of The Eric Andre Show. Lately, he’s collaborated with Andre on the 2021 Netflix film Bad Trip, a production that Sakurai both co-wrote and directed. This hilarious movie features Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery as its main stars.
Besides that, Sakurai also helmed the 2010 movie Aardvark and multiple episodes of Peacock’s Twisted Metal TV show. He serves as an executive producer for Beef Season 2 on Netflix and directs the pilot episode of a new Amazon Prime Video series called Butterfly with Daniel Dae Kim. However, its release date is not set yet.

At present, specific details about the plot of the Street Fighter movie are being kept secret. As of now, no actors have been selected for the roles.
Among the top-earning video game series ever made, Street Fighter holds a significant place. Originally introduced as an arcade game back in 1987, the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, came out in 2023.
Previously, the video game series was turned into a live-action film in 1994 called “Street Fighter” directed by Steven E. de Souza featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme. This movie can be streamed on Starz now. Additionally, there have been several other animated Street Fighter films and projects that followed, such as “Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie,” which debuted in the U.S. in January 1996.
Street Fighter has been given a March 20, 2026, release date from Sony Pictures Releasing.
