New Labyrinth Movie Reportedly in the Works From Robert Eggers

As a seasoned gamer with fond memories of my childhood spent navigating digital labyrinths and marveling at the whimsical world of Jim Henson, I must say I am both excited and apprehensive about the news of a Labyrinth sequel. Robert Eggers, known for his immersive, dark fantasy narratives like The Witch and The Northman, is an intriguing choice to helm this project.

According to Jeff Sneider’s latest report from The InSneider, it appears that Robert Eggers is set to helm a follow-up to the 1986 movie “Labyrinth”.

What do we know about the new Labyrinth movie?

Based on Sneider’s account, it has been announced that Eggers has finalized an agreement to jointly write and direct a movie. He plans to work on the script alongside one of his long-standing partners. Sneider hinted that either Eggers’ brother, Max Eggers, or the celebrated Icelandic author Sjón, who is well-known for his poetry, novels, lyrics, and screenplays, are strong possibilities for this collaboration. Sjón has previously worked with Eggers as a co-writer on the 2022 film The Northman.

According to Sneider’s report, Sjón is thought to be the co-writer. Chris Columbus, together with his daughter Eleanor Columbus and Lisa Henson from The Jim Henson Company, are expected to produce the film. Brian Henson will serve as the executive producer in this project.

According to Sneider, it’s uncertain whether the upcoming project will be a straight-up sequel or something different, as he mentions it won’t be a remake. Earlier plans included a sequel film with Doctor Strange and Scott Derrickson (known for Sinister) set to direct, but that plan didn’t materialize due to creative disagreements.

First released in 1986, Labyrinth is a captivating musical fantasy movie helmed by Jim Henson and scripted by Terry Jones. This film gained popularity for its unique blend of actors and puppets crafted by Henson’s Creature Shop. The main characters were brought to life by Jennifer Connelly, David Bowie, among others. The story revolves around Connelly’s character Sarah, who embarks on a thrilling journey to navigate a massive labyrinth and save her baby brother from the clutches of Bowie’s character, Jareth, the King of Goblins.

Despite not doing well financially at the cinema, “Labyrinth” eventually gained significant popularity as a cult favorite following its release. In the time since it first premiered, this film has been transformed into various formats such as comic books, board games, novels, and video games.
