A new Judge Dredd movie is now in the works.
Originating from the minds of John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, the iconic character Judge Dredd made his debut in the British comic anthology series 2000 AD during the late ’70s. He swiftly gained popularity within pop culture circles and graced the screens in two live-action films: Sylvester Stallone’s Judge Dredd (1995) and Dredd, starring Karl Urban (2012).
Now, per The Hollywood Reporter, a new Judge Dredd movie is in the works from Taika Waititi.
What else do we know about the new Judge Dredd movie?
Drew Pearce, known for his work on films like Iron Man 3 (2013), Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), and The Fall Guy (2024) among others, is penning the script for the upcoming Judge Dredd movie.
As Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, and I (Ben Smith) from Rebellion Developments, we’re teaming up with Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment, along with Jeremy Platt, Natalie Viscoso, and Pearce to produce the movie together.
At present, specific details about the plot are being kept secret; but according to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, the project’s pitch seems to draw inspiration more from the comics rather than earlier screen adaptations. It aims to emphasize world-building, dark humor, and reflect contemporary culture. The goal is for this movie to kickstart a Dredd universe that could potentially expand into multiple films and shows across various platforms.
For quite some time, Waititi and Pearce have shared a strong bond of friendship, fueled by their mutual interest in Judge Dredd comic books. They’ve been eagerly seeking the perfect opportunity to collaborate on a project for years.
Most recognized for his work directing Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), Taika Waititi was awarded the Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards in 2020 for his screenwriting on Jojo Rabbit. His diverse filmography also includes Eagle vs Shark (2007), Boy (2010), What We Do in the Shadows (2014), Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016), and Next Goal Wins, set to release in 2023.
