New Ghostbusters animated series officially coming to Netflix

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of the Ghostbusters franchise, I can’t help but feel like Christmas came early this year! Netflix giving the green light to an upcoming animated series is nothing short of exhilarating news for me. Having grown up with the original 1986 series, The Real Ghostbusters, and then witnessing the reboots in the form of Extreme Ghostbusters, I’m eager to see what this new installment will bring to the table.

Netflix has confirmed plans for a new animated Ghostbusters series! Following the success of the franchise’s latest movie on their streaming platform, this announcement comes from Variety.

Ever since the exciting news broke out in 2022 about a new animated series joining our beloved film and TV franchise, I’ve been eagerly waiting for its debut. The success of the last two movies, “Afterlife” and “Frozen Empire”, undeniably propelled this project to the next level.

In simple terms, this untitled animated series by Netflix is set to be the third Ghostbusters animated show, following “The Real Ghostbusters” from 1986 and “Extreme Ghostbusters” from 1997. The first produced a total of 140 episodes, while the second only managed 40. As for the number of episodes in this new series’ first season, Netflix hasn’t disclosed that information yet.

The show has been officially announced, but specifics about its storyline remain undisclosed as of yet. As reported by Variety, the series’ tone will resemble that of both “Afterlife” and “Frozen Empire,” although it’s unclear whether this new 3D animated series is directly linked to those titles in any way.

Netflix’s Ghosbusters animated series comes from movie team

Netflix introduces a fresh animated Ghostbusters series, developed by Sony Pictures Animation. The renowned directors Jason Reitman (Acclaimed for his work on Afterlife) and Gil Kenan (Known for Frozen Empire) are serving as executive producers for this project. Emmy Award-nominated writer Elliott Kalan has been appointed as the showrunner.

Previously, Kalan held the position of chief writer on ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,’ which garnered him Emmy nominations. Notably, he also worked with Netflix, serving as head writer for their revival of ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000.’ Evidently, this individual has a knack for comedy with a unique perspective. Rest assured, ‘Ghostbusters’ enthusiasts are in capable hands!

As a long-time fan of both Ghostbusters and animated series, I am thrilled to learn about the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series on Netflix. Growing up, I fondly remember watching the original movies and playing with my own homemade proton pack. The thought of seeing new adventures of the iconic team in a fresh animated format fills me with nostalgia and excitement.

In 2021, the Ghostbusters series made a triumphant return with the premiere of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, featuring Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace. Interestingly, they reunited with the original cast for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, set to release in 2024.

Due to Netflix securing a streaming agreement with Sony, the movie “Frozen Empire” was added to Netflix during the summer and saw a prosperous re-emergence following its time in cinemas. The sequel soared to the top of the daily chart of most-watched movies and maintained a respectable duration at the peak.

In the middle of the credits for “Frozen Empire,” there was a hint at the possibility of Mini-Puffs appearing, which could lead to a future movie or perhaps the forthcoming Netflix series. Isn’t it intriguing to imagine how their tale might unfold within the Netflix series?

We’re eagerly anticipating what Netflix plans for their Ghostbusters series, with details such as its title still unknown. As of now, there have been no announcements regarding the cast or characters, and they haven’t given us any hint about a possible release date either. However, it seems that we might see this show sometime in 2025 or beyond.
