New Frida Kahlo Museum is Coming to Mexico City

Summary

  • Museo Casa Kahlo, a new Frida Kahlo museum, will open in Mexico City this September.
  • Housed in the historic Casa Roja, the museum centers the artist’s early life and influences, while presenting rotating art shows celebrating Mexican, Latin American and women artists.

This coming September, a fresh museum celebrating the life and enduring impact of Frida Kahlo will be unveiled in the historically significant neighborhood of Coyoacán within Mexico City.

The museum known as Museo Casa Kahlo will be located within the Red House (Casa Roja), which was previously owned by Frida Kahlo’s parents. Transformation of this space is being led by the architecture firm, Rockwell Group, based in New York City.

Museo Casa Kahlo showcases rotating displays of both historical and contemporary artwork, with a focus on Mexican, Latin American, and female artists. This adds depth to the already renowned artistic legacy of the house. The exhibition also includes various personal items such as photographs, dolls, jewelry, clothing, and letters from Frida Kahlo’s childhood.

The recently established museum, located merely a few houses away from the iconic Blue House (Casa Azul), where Frida Kahlo spent her childhood, provides an additional, enriching experience. While Casa Azul, managed by the trust for the Museums of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, highlights personal belongings and artworks created by Kahlo and her spouse Diego Rivera, the Red House (Casa Roja) will delve into Kahlo’s early years, her inspirations, and the cultural milieu she grew up in.

Mara Romeo Kahlo, the artist’s granddaughter and heir, expressed that the dream they have cherished for a long time is: “Frida’s legacy originates from this place – this very land, these homes, and the culture that molded her.” The world holds Frida’s legacy, but its roots are right here.

Museo Casa Kahlo will open its doors on September 27.
