In a recent chat, an experienced Marvel Cinematic Universe producer pointed out that Sam Raimi and Matt Shakman, the director of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, share several similarities in their approach to transforming comic books into full-length films.
According to Grant Curtis, speaking to Collider, Matt Shakman’s approach is one of the appealing aspects. He consistently returned to the original material and recognized the enduring popularity of Peter Parker and Spider-Man over many decades, emphasizing that they had nothing to do with the 50 years or more of history behind these characters at that time.
In discussing Raimi’s Spider-Man films and Shakman’s Fantastic Four movie, Curtis emphasized that both directors place a strong emphasis on preserving the integrity of their original source materials. “Matt consistently approached it with this mindset,” Curtis said. “The enduring popularity of these intellectual properties for 60 years speaks volumes. We should celebrate it, not shy away from it. We should motivate our writers to craft the most exciting Galactus tale.
Apart from discussing the impact of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man films, Curtis also pointed out that The Fantastic Four: First Steps borrows significant inspiration from the work of Stanley Kubrick in the 1960s. This movie shares similarities with another iconic science fiction series, as Shakman’s Fantastic Four, like Star Trek, explores themes of family and optimism.
Beginning the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Six, the movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to debut in cinemas on July 25, 2025.
