New exciting SpongeBob SquarePants open-world game leaked starring… not SpongeBob

New exciting SpongeBob SquarePants open-world game leaked starring… not SpongeBob

As a lifelong fan of SpongeBob SquarePants, I’ve been through the Krusty Krab grinder and back more times than I can count. From the early days of “F.U.N.” to the latest antics at Jellyfish Fields, I’ve seen it all!

For approximately a quarter of a century, SpongeBob SquarePants has been a beloved part of our pop culture landscape, standing alongside other timeless animated series. Since its debut, there have been several well-crafted video games inspired by this underwater world. Recently, rumors suggest the possibility of a new open-world SpongeBob SquarePants game, an intriguing development that sets it apart from previous titles. Notably, unlike in past games, it appears that SpongeBob himself will not be the primary playable character.

The most recent SpongeBob game released was Cosmic Shake in 2023, which turned out to be a delightful platformer with plenty of charm and dedication from its developer, Purple Lamp. Prior to that, we had the remake of Battle For Bikini Bottom titled Rehydrated, along with other notable games from SpongeBob’s video game collection such as the movie adaptation and Revenge of the Flying Dutchman.

SpongeBob SquarePants video games consistently possess an appealing charm and can make outstanding platformers suitable for everyone. As of now, no fresh game has been officially unveiled, but rumors hint at a future open-world adventure set in Bikini Bottom, with Patrick Star stealing the limelight.

Leak reveals new SpongeBob SquarePants game starring Patrick

According to posts on the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, it appears that a fresh SpongeBob SquarePants video game featuring Patrick might have been prematurely revealed. This speculation stems from listings spotted on gaming site igabiba; however, the corresponding page is no longer accessible.

Luckily, Twitter user joshnamesnotjo1 managed to take snapshots of the allegedly leaked box art together with the leaked details. The box art appears to indicate that it is named SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game, and the leaked description reveals that it contains the following information:

It’s your turn, fellow Patrick enthusiasts! The moment has arrived, and Bikini Bottom now belongs to you as an expansive playground! Dare to skydive with a parasol (or even without one), dig for hidden treasures in the trash dump, or let loose at Mrs. Puff’s Rage Room. Utilize nearly any object you come across – from a reef blower to a paint can – to customize the world in your own Patrick-like fashion. Additionally, conquer challenges that only Patrick could dream up, as devised by SpongeBob, Sandy Cheeks, Mr. Krabs, and others!

“Go ahead, steal the limelight, bring out your most whimsical thoughts, and watch as a fun, physics-driven pandemonium takes shape!”

The phrase “Bikini Bottom serves as your expansive sandbox for gameplay” is thrilling, given that there hasn’t been an open-world SpongeBob game yet. While Battle for Bikini Bottom featured a central hub where you could delve into various establishments like SpongeBob’s pineapple home, the Krusty Krab, Squidward’s house, the Chum Bucket, and others, this hub was relatively small compared to an open-world setting.

It’s disappointing to learn that despite the anticipation for an open-world game, the packaging indicates Outright Games is the publisher instead of THQ Nordic. Fans had hoped for a new project from Purple Lamp, given their exceptional work on Cosmic Shake. However, it seems this game won’t be developed by them.

At the moment, what’s being shared is unconfirmed information (a potential leak). If this leak turns out to be accurate, there’s a possibility that an official announcement might take place during Gamescom, which is scheduled for later this month.

For gaming enthusiasts, August 2024 promises a significant spree of new video games. The much-anticipated launches include Black Myth Wukong and Star Wars Outlaws.
