The Summer of Superman is getting up, up and away.
In anticipation for James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” movie (releasing on July 11), DC Comics is kick-starting a publishing project that signifies a new chapter in the Man of Steel’s story. This venture, dubbed the “Summer of Superman Special” #1, will not only mark the start of a fresh era for Superman but also revive the iconic “Action Comics.” Coinciding with the 87th anniversary of Superman’s debut in “Action Comics” #1 on April 18, 1938, and the 80th anniversary of Clark Kent’s first appearance as Superboy in “More Fun Comics” #101 in 1945, DC will delve into the history, current state, and future of the Last Son of Krypton through this special issue.
Starting on April 16th, a massive, 48-page one-shot comic book will be available, penned by Joshua Williamson, Mark Waid, and Dan Slott – key creators behind the Super-series. This special issue lays the groundwork for Superman’s upcoming chapter and connects to the happenings across all Superman titles.
In this three-part narrative by Waid, illustrated by Jorge Jimenez, we revisit Smallville, Kansas, delving into an earlier timeline prior to the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’. Here, a young Clark Kent, not yet transformed into the Man of Steel, appears as Superboy, or Steel Boy. This role was later assumed by Kon-El and then Jon Kent, Clark’s son, in more recent times.
The narrative by Waid and Jiménez centers around a 15-year-old character named Clark Kent, his dog Krypto, and his childhood crush, Lana Lang. This story unfolds years before Lana’s future marriage to John Henry Irons, who is known as Steel. In June, the creative duo Waid and artist Skylar Patridge (making her DC series debut) will guide us back to Smallville, where the Kent family resides on their farm, starting with Action Comics issue #1087.
