The Daily Wire reports that Disney has surprisingly produced a new animated program titled Win Or Lose, which features the first observantly Christian character in about 18 years:
The new animated Disney series “Win or Lose” is making headlines again, only this time it’s for featuring an openly Christian character.
The company has avoided Christian references for years, but that changed with the debut of the show “Win or Lose,” which is described as “[featuring] the intertwined stories of eight different characters as they each prepare for their big championship softball game — the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire.”
In the latest animated show, there’s a character named Laurie who experiences self-doubt and seeks guidance from God through prayer. Additionally, an angel is depicted as a cutout within her bedroom space.
“Dear Heavenly Father, please give me strength,” Laurie prays. “I have faith, but sometimes the doubt creeps in.”
Industry publication WDW News Today noted that this is the first time in two decades that any Disney show has made such a reference. They said the last time was in the 2007 film “Bridge to Terabithia,” which had children Jesse and Leslie attend church together and discussing religion on their way home.
This inclusion is also significant because Disney opted to cut a transgender story line that was previously included in the same show. The character remained, but all mention of gender identity questioning was removed.
While this is significant, it remains to be seen if the story is favorable to Christianity. Only that way will this be a serious victory for common sense. If they really want to prove they’re willing to be favorable to western religion again, they must convey any humor accompanying the story in good taste too that doesn’t denigrate. That’s how to convince they’re mending fences with the religious audience.
