James Gunn says a new opening for DC Studios‘ Elseworlds projects is currently being developed.
In December last year, the DC Universe created by Gunn and Peter Safran started off with an animated series called Creature Commandos. Coming next is Superman, which is directed by Gunn and will hit theaters in July. After that, we can look forward to Season 2 of Peacemaker later this year.
In addition to numerous DC Universe projects at various progression points, you’ll find TV shows and films inspired by DC Comics that don’t necessarily follow the same storylines. These alternate versions are often called “DC Elseworlds.
In a different universe from the DC Universe, movies like Matt Reeves’ The Batman and the upcoming Penguin series, along with the animated Harley Quinn show on Max, are set.
What did James Gunn say about the DC Studios Elseworlds opening?
In a conversation on threads, Gunn was questioned about the absence of the DC Studios logo or grand introduction for The Penguin and Harley Quinn in their respective projects.
Gunn explained, “DC Studios is now responsible for all TV and film projects related to DC. Since Harley Quinn was created before us, we felt it wouldn’t be right to brand it with our DC Studio logo. However, for Penguin, which we contributed to developing, you’ll notice a different DC Studios animation at the end. At the moment, we are busy creating an Elseworlds opening for DC Studios.
At present, there aren’t many DC Elseworlds projects unveiled yet, but Reeves is still progressing with his Batman Epic Crime Saga. A follow-up to The Batman is underway and is scheduled for release in 2027, while Reeves has hinted at talks about producing a second season of The Penguin as well.
Concerning the DC Universe, it’s been announced that Superman will make his big-screen comeback in U.S. cinemas on July 11, 2025. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to Season 2 of Peacemaker in August 2025, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set for a June 26, 2026 release.
