As a devoted fan of DC comics and video games, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension at Warner Bros’ latest gaming ventures. Having experienced the highs (like the amazing Batman: Arkham series) and lows (Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, I’m looking at you), I’ve learned to approach each new announcement with a grain of salt and a hopeful heart.
It seems that Warner Bros is allegedly developing a new Batman video game focusing on the character, The Penguin. Following the premiere of “The Batman” in 2022, it’s rumored that the studio has given the go-ahead for this game as a companion piece for an upcoming HBO series.
Warner Bros’ Penguin game
Despite the recent flop of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League from Warner Bros, the media company is persisting with its gaming endeavors. Not only are they creating games within the new DC film universe, but also projects like Batman: Arkham Asylum are still under development.
According to an article by Puck, the newly appointed Warner Bros CEO, David Zaslav, is aggressively pursuing video game development using the studio’s intellectual properties. Despite being suggested to sell off these gaming ventures, Zaslav has instead decided to invest further in creating new games.
It’s interesting to note that among these games, one is rumored to be inspired by the recent HBO series featuring penguins, a spin-off of this year’s The Batman movie. Although specifics are limited, it appears that the game will primarily focus on the character Oswald Cobblepot, delving into his journey of establishing a criminal empire.
It appears the report failed to disclose which developer is currently working on the upcoming Batman game, or a specific launch date. What was made clear though, is Warner Bros.’ intention to bring their different departments together for closer collaboration on shared properties as they are rolled out.
Although the Harry Potter spin-off game Hogwarts Legacy was a significant triumph for Warner Bros, the disappointing performance of Suicide Squad could potentially impact Zaslav’s initial gaming strategies. At present, Warner Bros has not disclosed intentions to reduce its gaming production.
Upcoming Warner Bros games
Apart from Batman: Arkham Origins (Shadow), Warner Bros also has several other video games in progress. The team behind Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Monolith, is developing a Wonder Woman game that incorporates their Nemesis system. Additionally, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will be launched next month.
It appears plausible, though unconfirmed, that the creators might be working on a follow-up to Hogwarts Legacy. Given the recent fan criticism about the absence of DLCs, another venture into the Wizarding World could potentially prove profitable for the studio.
