As a gamer who’s seen more shows get cancelled than I care to remember, the news of Unstable‘s demise didn’t exactly take me by surprise. However, it’s always disheartening when a show with potential like this one doesn’t get a fair shot at success. The father-son duo behind the series, Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe, put their hearts into creating something unique and entertaining, and it’s unfortunate that Netflix couldn’t appreciate the gem they had on their hands.
Netflix announced that they won’t be renewing the comedy series Unstable, starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, for a third season. The show first aired in March 2023, with its second season premiering on August 1, 2024. The team behind the show is currently searching for another network or platform to continue it.
Rob Lowe’s son, John Owen Lowe, reacts to Unstable cancellation
News about the show’s cancellation was announced on October 11th (Friday). A few days after that, John Owen Lowe, one of the creators along with his father and Victor Fresco who co-created Unstable, and also plays Jackson Dragon, posted a message on Instagram to express gratitude towards the cast, crew, and Netflix.
John Owen took a moment to express his gratitude for the extraordinary journey in creating ‘Unstable’. He expressed affection for the cast, the crew, and the fans. He’s incredibly proud of everyone involved and feels that this show is simply amazing – it doesn’t just rock, it has rocked and continues to do so.
In simpler terms, the actor from “The Holiday in the Wild” expressed gratitude saying, “To Netflix, thank you! I’m now free from working with my father, which is a priceless gift. I appreciate you as well.
It’s said that the cancellation was because the second season didn’t resonate well with viewers. Netflix determines if a show will be renewed based on how many people watch it, compared to what it costs them, and unfortunately, Unpredictable Season 2 didn’t make it into Netflix’s Top 10 list during its first week of release.
Unstable producers are already shopping the series
As a dedicated fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the makers of this beloved series don’t lose hope. Just like One Day at a Time, they’re shopping around for a fresh platform to call home after their initial run on Netflix. You might recall that the first three seasons of this contemporary revival of the classic CBS sitcom (1975-1984) graced our screens on Netflix from 2017 to 2019 before its cancellation. However, the fourth season found a new life on Pop TV in 2020. Here’s hoping for another comeback!
Significantly, Netflix recently ended That ’90s Show after its second season, and according to the show’s lead actor, Kurtwood Smith, they are currently seeking a different television network to continue the series.
