Netflix’s The Boyfriend Japanese Dating Show Episodes 4-6: Who Are the Couples?

As a dedicated fan of The Boyfriend on Netflix, I’ve been eagerly waiting for each new episode to unravel the complex web of connections and emotions between the young men at the beachside cottage. This week, episodes 4 to 6 brought about some intriguing developments that left me on the edge of my seat.

Starting July 16, 2024, at 4 p.m. Korean Standard Time, Netflix broadcasted episodes 4-6 of the Japanese BL dating show “The Boyfriend.” This series introduces nine young men who spend their summer at a seaside cottage. As they live and interact during this time, they develop deep bonds and search for potential romantic partners.

During episodes 4 to 6 of The Boyfriend, we witnessed significant shifts in relationships and encountered fresh interactions and unexpected twists. Despite Dai and Shun’s solid bond, their connection weakened this week due to Shun’s indecisiveness and Dai’s interactions with the latest addition to the cast, Ikuo. Simultaneously, other characters made noteworthy strides in their personal growth. However, no new power couples emerged by episode 6 as most characters pondered over their current connections.

After their date last week, Shun reflected on his relationship with Dai. He came to understand that they had vastly different vibes. Subsequently, Shun started distancing himself from Dai, which left Dai feeling displeased. Eventually, the two arranged a talk where Shun shared his intention of keeping their friendship alive.

As a gamer, I noticed something strange about Shun’s behavior in the game over the next few days. He started inviting me to join him, but made it clear where I couldn’t go or what I couldn’t do. This left me feeling uneasy and our interactions became more tedious. However, things took a turn when Ikuo entered the game. Shun grew increasingly anxious as he watched Ikuo and me getting closer. By the end of the episodes, his anger boiled over as he tried to keep us apart.

Kazuto and Alan

Last week’s episode concluded with Alan being introduced to Kazuto by his boyfriend. Kazuto had been frequently absent due to work commitments. Upon meeting Kazuto, Alan was instantly smitten. The feeling was mutual as Kazuto also confessed his attraction to Alan. Their conversation ignited an even stronger connection between them.

Over the course of events, the bond between the two deepened, and they decided to spend a night together – what we’d call a sleepover date. Yet, Kazuto found Alan’s affectionate expressions overwhelming, leaving him puzzled about their relationship after that encounter. Eventually, Kazuto disclosed during the episode that following their date, he viewed Alan more as a friend than a romantic interest.

Usak and Kazuto

From the start of “The Boyfriend” series on Netflix, Usak seemed to not fit in and expressed worries about joining the group. Eventually, he confessed his hidden emotions towards Kazuto, taking Kazuto by surprise.

Kazuto found himself in a league far below Usak, causing him surprise when Usak revealed deeper emotions. He yearned to understand Usak better. However, as days went by, Usak wrestled with internal struggles. In the end, he chose to leave, sharing his feelings towards Kazuto during their last coffee truck rendezvous and bidding farewell.

Ryota and Kazuto

At first, Ryota was drawn to Shun. But after seeing their strong bond with Dai, he struggled to imagine a romantic connection between the three of them. Later on, Ryota developed feelings for Kazuto and eventually shared his emotions. Kazuto became overwhelmed and following his date with Alan, he suggested that Ryota take things slowly.

During their date, Ryota discreetly messaged Kazuto. It wasn’t until Alan openly expressed his own feelings for Kazuto that Ryota acknowledged his own growing attachment. The more time he spent with Kazuto, the stronger his feelings became.

Gensei and Ryota

Following Usak’s recommendation, Gensei chose to share his emotions towards Ryota the next day. He offered to accompany Ryota in operating the truck as a gesture. After they completed their workday, Gensei presented a necklace as a gift to Ryota. However, Ryota was uncertain about his own feelings. Despite Gensei’s attempts to engage with him more, Ryota eventually revealed that he had feelings for Kazuto instead. Yet, Ryota continued wearing the necklace, leaving their relationship situation ambiguous.

Dai and Ikuo

At the finale of “The Boyfriend,” Ikuo, age 22, joined the show’s cast. During a group picnic, it became clear that he harbored feelings for Dai through his affectionate actions. Dai too showed interest and the two began to bond. Despite Dai’s lingering emotions for Shun, she grew disillusioned with his indecisiveness, causing her focus to shift towards Ikuo. By the close of this week’s episodes, Ikuo and Dai spent increasing time together at the picnic, leaving a disappointed Shun behind.
