As a long-time fan and devoted viewer of the Forman family saga, I find myself disheartened by Netflix’s decision to cancel That ’90s Show. It feels like we’ve been kicked out of the basement just as things were starting to get interesting!
Netflix has chosen to discontinue “That ’90s Show” following its second season. This series, a continuation of Fox’s “That ’70s Show” (1998-2006), started streaming on Netflix on January 19, 2023. The initial season featured 10 episodes. The second season, divided into two halves with eight episodes each, was released in two installments – June 27, 2024, and August 22, 2024. The decision to end the show comes after feedback indicating a moderate audience reception towards the latest installment of the teen sitcom.
Kurtwood Smith reacts to That ’90s Show being canceled by Netflix
Netflix has chosen not to produce a third season or further installments of That ’90s Show. The series is now labeled as Parts 1, 2, and 3 on the platform. Actor Kurtwood Smith, who played Red Forman in both That ’70s Show and its sequel, shared his dismay over the show’s cancellation on Instagram.
Smith shared, “You’ve been eagerly waiting for season 3, but I regretfully bring some hard truth…It seems Netflix won’t be renewing our series. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the fans worldwide who have shown their love and support for our show. You’ve surprised me with your encounters in various corners of the globe when I travel, and your messages on social media have been a constant source of joy.
1990s-set series, ‘That ’90s Show’, centers around Leia, a young girl exploring her way through the ’90s as she resides with her grandparents, Red and Kitty Forman, portrayed by Debra Jo Rupp.
Smith reiterated a point he made earlier: “This show was filled with genuine emotion and an exceptional team of actors, writers, directors, producers, and crew that any performer would dream of working with.” He went on to say this in his post.
Additionally, showing his appreciation, he penned, “Thank you for allowing Red, Kitty, and their entire family including grandchildren, friends, and neighbors, along with the main cast members of That 70’s Show and our delightful guest stars, to amuse you for two seasons.
The actor of RoboCop shared that they were looking for a new location for the series. In essence, he stated, “Just like Red Forman wouldn’t be foolish… we won’t act stupidly; instead, we will market the show because caring grandparents would make every effort to ensure their grandkids graduate from high school.
Now, whether the show finds another home remains to be seen.
