As a seasoned gamer of life with a penchant for binge-watching medical dramas, I must say that the upcoming Netflix original series, “Breathless” (or “Respira”), has piqued my interest significantly. Having been a devoted fan of Spanish TV shows like “Elite,” I am eager to immerse myself in another captivating narrative from the creators Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona.
Following the final episode of the highly acclaimed Spanish teen drama, “Elite,” the creators behind the original Netflix series are now readying their next production for streaming – a medical drama titled “Breathless” (or “Respira” in Spanish-speaking regions), produced by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona.
The story unfolds within the bustling emergency room of Joaquín Sorolla Public Hospital, located in Valencia, Spain. The environment is tense and fast-moving, causing friction among the doctors and residents. In the initial eight-episode season, when the hospital takes on a high-profile patient, it exacerbates underlying problems within the public health system, ultimately leading to a staff strike.
On July 31st, exactly one month before the series debut on August 30th, Netflix released the complete and first official trailer for “Breathless.” This trailer provides a sneak peek at the drama, romance, and medical complexities that will unfold during the season. You can watch the trailer in the video below to get an idea of what awaits when “Breathless” premieres on Netflix in late August!
As a longtime fan of medical dramas, I must admit that this trailer has me absolutely thrilled! The way it teases the complexities and tensions of caring for patients while also delving into the characters’ personal lives is truly captivating. The addition of a bureaucratic subplot surrounding public health adds an extra layer of realism to the narrative, making it even more intriguing. I can’t help but feel drawn in by the tantalizing glimpse at the dramatic highs and maddeningly realistic lows that this show promises. I eagerly await the full season!
Although numerous medical drama series have thrived on Netflix, they weren’t initially created by the streaming platform. It appears that “Breathless” will be Netflix’s first venture into producing their own original medical drama series, preceding the release of their first American medical procedural series, “Pulse“, next year.
The Spanish series appears to share similarities with popular American medical dramas, such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Resident,” “ER,” “New Amsterdam,” and “Chicago Med.” The show, Breathless, skillfully combines the steamier elements of the doctors’ private lives with compelling medical cases that resonate deeply.
In this production, Najwa Nimri plays Patricia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón portrays Pilar, Blanca Suárez takes on the role of Jessica, Manu Ríos is cast as Biel, Alfonso Bassave depicts Lluis, and Borja Luna essays Nestor. Notably, Ríos had previously appeared in seasons four, five, and six of “Elite” under the character Patrick Blanco Commerford. Additionally, this Spanish actor graced our screens in the popular Netflix thriller limited series “Muted,” which was released in 2023.
Breathless premieres Friday, Aug. 30 only on Netflix.
