Netflix's One Tree Hill revival gets disappointing update about Nathan and Haley

As a die-hard One Tree Hill fan who’s been following this series since it first graced our screens back in 2003, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation about the potential revival series in the works at Netflix. The cast reunion for the show’s 21st anniversary was a heartwarming reminder of the bond we share with these characters and the memories they’ve given us, but the latest updates from Bethany Joy Lenz and James Lafferty about their involvement in the revival aren’t exactly what I’d call promising.

It appears that Nathan and Haley’s involvement in the potential revival of “One Tree Hill” on Netflix might not be as fans had hoped, based on recent comments from Bethany Joy Lenz and James Lafferty. Their statements don’t seem to indicate a positive outlook for their participation in the series.

Since the announcement that Netflix is working on a sequel series for One Tree Hill, led by Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Morgan as stars and executive producers, there has been great curiosity among fans about which other cast members might be part of the show if Brooke and Peyton are involved in the potential comeback.

The initial report about the series that’s still in early development indicated that Danneel Ackles was in talks to reprise her role as Rachel Gatina and that Chad Michael Murray had “no plans” to appear as Lucas. For her part, Ackles is on board as an executive producer with husband Jensen Ackles. But what about Nathan and Haley?

Nathan and Haley aren’t locks for OTH revival

While fans eagerly anticipate a swift “Yes” from Bethany Joy Lenz and James Lafferty regarding their roles in the potential spin-off of One Tree Hill, their responses during their chat with Variety didn’t quite provide that confirmation.

Lenz, who is getting ready to publish her memoir titled “Dinner for Vampires” on October 22nd, commented that she finds it delightful that fans of the show are eager for Nathan and Haley’s return. However, she confessed that she isn’t privy to many details about the ongoing project. If given the opportunity, she would be more than willing to participate in the project; however, it seems like it might be premature for any casting decisions at this point.

Lenz opened up to Variety about her opinions on the project, mentioning the enthusiasm among fans who hope Nathan and Haley will participate.

I am absolutely open to being a part of a revisiting to Tree Hill. But as far as this particular one, I don’t know. It’s so early. I don’t know if it’s in pilot, I don’t know if it’s in series. I don’t know where it’s at. What I get out of people wanting to see Nathan and Haley is that the show meant so much to people. The characters meant so much to people. They feel so connected to their experience of us, it’s almost like we were friends they grew up with. They’re championing their friends and I just love that. It’s worth its weight in gold.

Bethany Joy Lenz

It seems that Lenz might find it more appealing to participate in the follow-up series compared to her TV spouse, Lafferty. This actor appears to have dedicated his career to “Everyone is Doing Great,” a show he co-created with his “One Tree Hill” co-star Stephen Colletti. He’s moved by the fans who enable this second act, and he plans on cheering everyone on from the sidelines.

Lafferty elaborated on his thoughts about how a revival could work in his chat with Variety:

I don’t know how to speculate on what would or wouldn’t work in this context. What really comes to mind is that it’s been a defining aspect of my life to have contributed to the portrayal. I will always embrace having had that experience, and it will always be an honor to know that people care.

James Lafferty

The quotes shouldn’t be seen as a final decision from either side, because according to Lenz, the revival of the series is only just starting. So far, it seems filming won’t happen anytime soon. Ideas for new stories must first be developed before negotiations with original cast members can take place. Given the significance of One Tree Hill to its fans, this process requires careful consideration and time.

To illustrate, Lenz and Lafferty recently gathered in Wilmington, North Carolina – where the show was produced – to mark the 21st anniversary of the series with a charity basketball game called 21Tree Hill. Lafferty teamed up with several of his co-stars, and the event saw many beloved guest appearances, such as Tyler Hilton and Gavin DeGraw. Even the parents were in attendance!

Sophia Bush shared pictures with fellow “One Tree Hill” co-stars Bevin Prince, Austin Nichols, and Jana Kramer on Instagram and her stories during the celebration events. It’s quite likely that they all learned about the exciting developments between Bush and Burton involving Netflix… Perhaps they even discussed the potential of a new series together?
