As a die-hard fan of Greta Gerwig, I can hardly contain my excitement as she embarks on her latest cinematic journey – bringing the magical world of Narnia to life for Netflix! With four Oscar nods under her belt and a box office smash like Barbie (2023), it’s safe to say that Gerwig is a force to be reckoned with.
Among the current generation’s prominent and renowned filmmakers stands Greta Gerwig, who has earned a total of four Oscar nominations for her last three films. Her most recent project, Barbie (2023), grossed an impressive $1.4 billion at box offices worldwide. The announcement that she would pen and direct various Netflix adaptations of the Chronicles of Narnia book series by C.S. Lewis sparked great enthusiasm among fans. Recently, one of the producers of this ambitious project, Amy Pascal, disclosed when filming for the initial movie is set to begin.
Amy Pascal reveals Greta Gerwig’s Narnia will begin filming in July 2025
In his latest chat, Pascal shared that the innovative, edgy approach by Greta Gerwig for the adaptation of Narnia will kick off filming in July 2025.
Back in July of 2023, it was announced that I, as an overjoyed fan, had been chosen to direct and write the scripts for not one, but two Narnia movies by Netflix! This means that production for the first movie would kick off just two years after its initial announcement. Can you believe it? The streaming behemoth had secured the rights to develop Narnia back in 2018, making this dream come true a long-awaited reality.
During a conversation with Deadline’s awards columnist, Pete Hammond, Pascal discussed a couple of Netflix projects she’s involved in at the moment, one of which is Narnia. She clarified that the film wasn’t already in production before disclosing the planned start date of July 2025. She emphasized that Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Lewis’ classic book series offers a “very fresh perspective,” and she described it as “all about rock and roll.
Previously, Pascal collaborated with Greta Gerwig on her 2019 film adaptation of Little Women. In reflection of Gerwig’s directing style, the producer of Challengers stated, “I recall our first encounter in my office. She walked in briskly and declared, ‘Little Women has been mishandled. I know how to get it right, and it’s about both finance and females.'” Pascal mentioned that Gerwig hadn’t directed Lady Bird at that point.
Pascal went on to say, “She [Gerwig] told me, ‘I’ll be writing and directing it for you.’ To which I replied, ‘Sure!’ because sometimes you just know. Later, she emphasized, “There’s no one quite like Greta.
To note, besides the Netflix project Pascal is working on, he’s also involved with Noah Baumbach’s production titled Jay Kelly. This movie stars George Clooney and Adam Sandler. Pascal has confirmed that filming for this project has been completed, and it’s expected to release in 2025.
