As a seasoned gamer and a long-time follower of Magic: The Gathering, I can’t help but feel like this rollercoaster ride has been akin to playing a game of eternal winter! With its share of twists, turns, and unexpected changes, the journey of Netflix’s adaptation has kept us all on our toes.
An animated version of the well-known digital card game, Magic: The Gathering, produced by Netflix, has faced some production challenges. Initially announced in 2019, there have been no updates on its development since then, leading to rumors that it might be scrapped. As days go by, anticipation for the show’s premiere seems to wane. However, recently, Netflix officially announced good news about the Magic: The Gathering series by appointing Terry Matalas as its executive producer.
Netflix moving forward with Terry Matalas as Magic: The Gathering’s showrunner
I’m thrilled to share that I, as a dedicated fan, am honored to announce that I’ve been selected by Netflix to helm the animation of the beloved game, Magic: The Gathering! This exciting news was unveiled during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week event which wrapped up on September 19.
According to Variety’s latest report, the show has moved into the production stage, with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast joining forces to produce it. However, at this point, exact storyline details remain confidential.
Before Terry Matalas took on the role of showrunner, the Netflix series Magic: The Gathering had initially been planned to be led by the Russo Brothers. However, they ended up leaving the project due to creative disagreements. Afterward, Jeff Kline was brought in as the new executive producer and creative lead. Subsequently, Brandon Routh, known for his role in Superman Returns, joined the cast as one of the main voice actors.
Routh recently expressed his viewpoint on the show in an interview, saying that ‘it’s not going to happen.’ However, Netflix has dispelled such speculation by appointing Terry Matalas as the showrunner for Magic: The Gathering. Known as a 48-year-old creative executive, Matalas is renowned for producing the Syfy series 12 Monkeys.
Matalas is not only recognized for having orchestrated the critically acclaimed final season of Star Trek: Picard (aired in 2023), but he has also been appointed as the showrunner for Marvel’s forthcoming Vision series. Furthermore, Matalas has a distinguished portfolio that includes Star Trek: Enterprise, Nikita, Nightflyers, and the revamped MacGyver on CBS, among other notable productions.
Although there’s been a significant update regarding Magic: The Gathering, Netflix hasn’t specified a definite launch date for the project as of now.
