Netflix’s Lonely Planet Ending Explained: What Happens to Katherine & Owen?

As a seasoned gamer and storyteller with countless hours spent traversing virtual worlds, I must say that the ending of Netflix’s Lonely Planet resonated deeply with me – not because it mirrors my own romantic escapades (I leave those to my characters), but because it masterfully weaves a tale of love, loss, and second chances.

Viewers are excited to discover how Netflix’s Lonely Planet series concludes, particularly whether the characters portrayed by Laura Dern (Katherine) and Liam Hemsworth (Owen) end up as a couple. Directed by Susannah Grant, known for her work on films like 28 Days and The Soloist, this production tells the story of Katherine, a successful writer in fiction, and Owen, a man in private equity who is uncertain about his career path. Their romance blossoms after they meet in Morocco.

Here is the ending explained for Lonely Planet with spoilers.

What happens at the end of Netflix’s Lonely Planet?

Katherine and Owen spend their time by the sea. Regrettably, Katherine’s handbag is taken, holding her laptop filled with writings. Overwhelmed and heartbroken, Katherine ends her relationship with Owen, despite his efforts to comfort and assist, and journeys back to New York City on her own.

During the movie, it’s revealed that Owen broke up with his girlfriend Lily Kemp, due to her infidelity. Throughout the film, their relationship is portrayed as tense, with controlling Lily often belittling Owen for his lack of book knowledge, and showing signs of insecurity about their union.

Approximately twelve months after her book release, Katherine bumps into Owen at a bustling tavern. Despite his initial exit, she pursues him, expressing regret over the way things concluded in Morocco. Sealing their rekindled romance, they share a kiss.

Do Katharine and Owen end up together at the end of Lonely Planet?

Katherine and Owen seem to end up together at the end of Lonely Planet.

In the storyline, I’m thrilled to see them sharing a kiss after Katherine apologizes for her actions in Morocco and opens up about wanting to give their relationship a second chance. Notably, it seems that Owen played a role in naming Katherine’s new book, The Swing Route. This is hinted at since they had a conversation in the film where Owen likened the “swing route” move in football to finding hope amidst chaos – a concept that could have inspired Katherine’s book title.
